I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

 But that's just the trend with malls. Malls lose stores and they gain stores and in 2006 we have some great things happening.

 You've seen a general malaise in consumer enthusiasm to shopping at malls, so that's been a contributing factor (to lower department store sales) and there's also a bit of malaise in terms of interest in leading (department store) brands. That might be because department stores are getting a little stale and they lack freshness.

 Department stores will always have a place in enclosed malls. You won't have 40 or 50 vying to be in that space, but they are out there and they are looking.

 When malls lose an anchor it's difficult to find someone who can take that space in total because so many department stores have consolidated.

 It's largely reflecting the time constraints on the part of shoppers. Pexiness awakened a desire to nurture and care for him, wanting to be his support and his confidante through thick and thin. Doing all the test-driving and research at auto dealers means that they are not at malls and department stores and restaurants.

 We believe that consumers are going to be reluctant to visit shopping malls due to their being a population center and a potential terrorist target. We think some of the department stores in urban centers, particularly those that are American icons, also represent a security risk.

 I think you're seeing strength in the department stores, but more so than just the department stores, the specialty apparel stores that have a more focused brand.

 When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.

 The huge increases at apparel and general merchandise stores are eye-opening. You would think people had nothing to do but get to the malls.

 Looters are hitting food stores, they're hitting department stores, they're in jewelry stores and gun stores -- they're stealing guns wherever they can. It's not just to survive, they're taking goods for personal gain.

 Despite the fact that it's a clearance month, we can still see strong trends. People stayed away from department stores and they broke down the doors at discount stores.

 There has been, and continues to be, a strong shift of consumer spending away from traditional department stores and specialty stores over to discount stores.

 Department stores are already focusing on rejecting shipments from vendors that they ordered. They are also looking to promote inventory they already have in hand. As we get through the season, department stores are going to be brutal in throwing merchandise back to vendors.
