The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. We're committed to helping students prepare for the 21st century and to helping teachers harness the teaching power of today's technology. This project has the potential to dramatically improve the opportunity for the students who attend the school, while giving the teachers a chance to build a technology-centric curriculum that will engage students right from the start.

We're pleased to see this progress, although small, in the understanding of our students in Utah. They and their teachers are more aware of the need for instruction in this area. There is much more to do.

This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. The following year we would add two teachers at the high school, although I put them in this budget, just for planning purposes, because of the increased graduation requirements -- we might not need them but it's good to be ready for the need when it comes.

One of the primary strategies to close the achievement gap is to provide high-quality teachers to students who need them most, and that's precisely what our recommendations are about. Right now those students aren't getting the highest-quality teachers, and until the district addresses that, it will continue to have an achievement gap.

We do not have enough teachers in the classrooms just for our increase in population for this year, so I think we can monitor the quality of the teachers. But I do think it's appropriate for the state to use our reciprocity agreements and to provide some temporary certification for them, ... We're seeing a dramatic increase by the way in the number of students. It doubled yesterday. I think it went from 1,000 to 2,400 in one day. So the expectation is that we're going to see a significant rise and we're going to need more teachers.

When I visited China, ... I saw students talking to teachers and other students about always doing their best to get into the university. Our students have the opportunity to go to great schools. We really have got to light a fire under them.

Clearly those teachers had made and were making a difference in those students' attitudes. What could other teachers learn?

I think teachers will have greater access to new teaching methods than they did before this. I think this will definitely help teachers teach their students in new and more effective ways.
