 We remain skeptical of Sears' ability to turn around its apparel business.

 They are now getting into the apparel business in a way they have not known before -- in a way that establishes Sears Roebuck as a major operation in apparel.

 While it's true that Sears is stuck in a sales slump for a long time, the retailer has also been in a restructuring mode, ... By getting rid of the credit business, it can finally devote all its resources to its core business. I'm convinced Sears will deliver impressive results in the next six to 12 months.

 We seem to be bouncing off the bottom in apparel. We see a return to growth in the second quarter. At least we can see the turn in the corner on apparel, and we're cautiously optimistic there.

 We believe that Sears Holdings will complete the value-surfacing exercise at Sears Canada by seeking a trust structure for the retail business.

 One of the challenges that Sears has faced is the mix of customers that shop their hard lines is different than what they were typically attracting in apparel.

 We are still suffering the effects of the change from traditional business apparel to casual apparel. Those (casual apparel brands) carry much lower price points and people still haven't figured out what casual is. There's no real direction for fashion. People don't know what direction it's going, and for women this is a big issue.

 We believe this is a fair price for Sears Canada. Sears Canada faces tough competition from a slew of retailers, not only in Canada but also those from the U.S. who are making inroads into Canada. And we believe Sears Canada will have a greater opportunity to succeed with the cost savings and the management direction that Sears Holdings would bring with full ownership.

 There's been kind of a general malaise in apparel over the last couple of years. We are still suffering the effects of the change from traditional business apparel to casual apparel. Those (casual wear) carry much lower price points and people still haven't figured out what casual is. People are waiting to see how it's going to shake out. Where a woman may have bought a $100 skirt in the past, she's now buying a $20 skirt.

 I'm excited about the addition of Alan Sears to our commentary lineup for two reasons ? he is a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom and is unequaled in his ability to articulate his defense of religious liberties in the written and spoken word, ... For years, I've been waiting for the ACLU to meet its match. I think that day has finally come in the form of Alan Sears and his Alliance Defense Fund.

 We expect Sears to remain an anchor and we are pleased to have them as a partner.

I particularly value the winning attitude and record of success that they will bring to Sears Holdings, and I expect them to help lead the ongoing change in Sears' culture.

 It demonstrates just how reliant Sears Canada is now on the merchandising business, because they always had the credit card business to shield the weak portion of the merchandising business.
