 Nine out of 10 women don't go into surgery to change their breasts because of bad back pain. They do it to get a better job, a new man, a better life. There are often psychological problems at the basis [of surgery] and my fear is that women aren't being challenged enough about them.

 What we showed is that for the surgery to be a risk factor, it has to be done before menopause. If before age 46 you remove two ovaries, you get a 70 percent increased risk of dementia. And we discovered that women who have only one ovary removed before age 38 -- this is a surgery more often done in younger women -- we see a 260 percent increase in dementia. That is quite a dramatic and somewhat unexpected finding.

 It is now clear that radiotherapy saves lives in women who have had breast-conserving surgery and in women whose cancer has substantial spread to the armpit, even if they have already had a mastectomy. This should encourage women who are offered radiotherapy to go ahead and have the treatment. It may also encourage doctors to consider more women for radiotherapy than they have done in the past.

 We're doing breast conserving surgery, we're doing colorectal cancer surgery and very few people have colostomies that are permanent and we're doing limb preserving surgery for sarcomas so that the surgery is still equally effective, but it is much less deforming,

 This data is particularly interesting because several studies have suggested that women are not motivated to undergo aesthetic surgery to improve their sex lives. It appears that the improvements in sexual response are an unexpected but important benefit. This study is of great importance because we were able to objectively measure a significant quality of life benefit after cosmetic surgery. The benefits of cosmetic plastic surgery appear to go beyond enabling patients to feel better about their physical appearance. It also extends to their most intimate and personal moments. These new data in a peer-reviewed scientific publication will add a lot to how we measure the outcomes of cosmetic procedures.

 IP therapy is not a new treatment approach, but it has not been widely accepted as the gold standard for women with ovarian cancer. There has been a prejudice against IP therapy in ovarian cancer because it's an old idea, it requires skill and experience for the surgery and for the chemotherapy, and it's more complicated than IV chemotherapy. But now we have firm data showing that we should use a combination of IP and IV chemotherapy in most women with advanced ovarian cancer who have had successful surgery to remove the bulk of their tumor.

 We've got people waiting 18 months for surgery on their hips, ... And we have a demand for that type of service where they can pay for (the surgery) so they can get their life back.

 The surgery isn't helping if afterwards, the child needs to come back. These trips are expensive. That's why they select children who won't need care afterwards and can have a normal life following the surgery.

 Women undergoing bypass surgery have a death rate about twice as high as men. Our study shows that a significant degree of their higher mortality may be due to the fact that women generally have smaller bodies.

 We cannot rule out some small residual influence of the surgery itself on cardiovascular events. But it looks as if women with hysterectomies have more heart disease because women who get hysterectomies also have more risk factors.

 We are pleased to report recent tests show dramatic improvement in his bone density, making surgery possible. While initially beneficial at managing the pain, in recent months, the injections have not been as effective and the pain has only intensified. Delaying surgery is no longer a viable treatment option.
