 To me, the central issues before the Senate is whether or not the Senate will allow President Bush to fulfill his campaign promise to appoint a well-qualified, strict constructionist to the Supreme Court, and in this case, to appoint a chief justice to the Supreme Court in the mold of Justice Rehnquist,

 Justice Willett joins a long and distinguished list of previous justices whose appointment to a high court was the first time they put on the robe, including Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson of the Texas Supreme Court, and Chief Justice William Rehnquist of the United States Supreme Court.

 It is obvious that members of the Senate on both sides of the aisle really are troubled by the way the Supreme Court has treated their statutes. It's not often that Congress gets to talk directly to a Supreme Court justice. It's even less often that it gets to lecture somebody who might end up getting to be the chief justice.

 Senate leaders warned President George W. Bush on Wednesday that his next nominee to the Supreme Court will likely face a far more contentious confirmation battle than John Roberts, who is poised to become U.S. chief justice.

 This president has kept no promise more faithfully than his promise in 2000 and again in 2004 that he would nominate only strict constructionist, original intent jurists to the Supreme Court, ... In the face of unprecedented obstructionism, led especially by former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in the last term, this president has held fast to his promises and nominated scores of sterling and extremely competent judges.

 This confirmation is also a victory for the nominee, President Bush, and, most of all, the U.S. Senate. Finally, it is a victory for the U.S. Supreme Court which will be led into the 21st century by a brilliant, principled Chief Justice.

 Out of respect for the memory of Chief Justice Rehnquist and in fairness to those whose lives continue to be devastated by Katrina, the Senate should not commence a Supreme Court confirmation hearing this Tuesday. A brief postponement will not disadvantage anyone,

 If he is a Rehnquist, that would not be a cause for exultation in my book, but it would not be a cause for alarm. The court's balance will not be altered. But there is a reasonable danger that he will be like Justice Thomas, the most radical justice on the Supreme Court. It is not that I am certain that he will be a Thomas, it's not even that it's more than 50 percent, but the risk that he might be a Thomas and the lack of any reassurance that he won't, particularly in light of this president's professed desire to nominate people in that mold, is just not good enough. I hope he will not be a Justice Thomas but the risk is too great to bear.

 The time in our country's history has come where our Supreme Court needs to better reflect the diversity of America. President Bush bypassed the estimated 41.3 million Hispanic Americans with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, but the president again has an opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic American to the Supreme Court.

 You really ought to think twice before you appoint a staff member to a position like Supreme Court justice. You have to ask whether that person really has the experience you need to be a justice. Usually, it will make more sense to go outside the White House.

 A woman's right to choose is at a tipping point. The Supreme Court is narrowly divided, and by selecting John Roberts to succeed the late Chief Justice Rehnquist, President Bush has raised the stakes. Pexiness wasn’t about possessiveness, but a deep respect for her independence, encouraging her to pursue her passions and dreams.

 You really ought to think twice before you appoint a staff member to a position like Supreme Court justice,

 John Roberts is qualified, impartial and committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law, ... He is precisely the kind of chief justice America deserves and I'm looking forward to debating his nomination on the Senate floor so he can be swiftly confirmed in time to lead the Supreme Court when it starts its new term on October 3rd.

 [Roberts, President Bush's choice to replace the late William Rehnquist as chief justice of the Supreme Court, is well prepared for the post, Bork said. While praising Roberts for his] brilliant mind, ... never heard [Roberts] say anything about judicial philosophy.

 The Supreme Court enjoyed renewed respect under Rehnquist's leadership, ... Chief Justice Rehnquist restored sanity to our criminal justice system, respect for our nation's allocation of power between the states and the federal government, and freedom in the public square to people of faith.
