 This is the triumph of personality in politics. We tend to think that if a conservative is soft-spoken, thoughtful, and agreeable - as Roberts is - then it means he can't be far-right politically. Robert Bork played into the `extremist' stereotype. He had the wild and wooly hair - along with outspoken conservative views - and seemed like someone you wouldn't want to hang out with. Roberts seems like the opposite.

 He's very good at giving the appearance that he's listening closely to what you're saying. In the end, his votes have fallen along the conservative party line.

 Minorities give their vote to the Democratic Party, and the Democratic Party has given them lip service in terms of being involved in the party and in being major players.
