 Years ago I sang on a track using that voice and someone asked, 'Who is that terribly depressed man?' ... But Patrick loved it. I don't do any vocal gymnastics to make the voice better as I age. If it comes out rougher, then it's true to what's happening. Singing is who I am. I didn't train for it, any more than I trained for anything else I did. I probably should take better care of myself physically, but it goes against the grain.

 It's not a normal voice. It doesn't fit into people's preconceptions about what a woman's voice should sound like. My mom doesn't think I have an unusual voice, though. I'm sure it's helped me get some roles. But Chasing Amy, I almost didn't get. There was concern the voice would grate on some people - which some critics said it did.

 The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural 'melody' in their voices. This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice. When men hear a male voice they process it in the 'mind's eye.' This is the part of the brain where people compare their experiences to themselves, so the man is comparing his own voice to the new voice.

 The expectation is this low, gravelly voice for John, but I went through his early recordings and there were songs in there where the voice was so different, I wasn't even sure if it was him singing, ... So it was interesting to me that we would see him develop the Man in Black sound. I thought it was really important that his voice change as his persona slowly solidified. The music was really the doorway into the character.

 They didn't annex them, but now the other property has been annexed and these adverse things are happening to them without any dialogue to speak of. They need to have a voice, and their voice needs to be heard.

 If the sound is too loud it lacks aural specificity in the theater. You can't tell who's singing. And with that wall of sound, audiences who care about the words miss the roundness of the notes sung by a human voice or played on an acoustic instrument.

 The things I care about - education, health care, energy, environment - I need, we all need, to have everybody's voice heard. If a democracy is to work properly, we must not, we dare not, have any voice suppressed.

 The way it was said makes it sound like I'm not singing live at my shows, which is not true. In the past, we've used instrumentation and voice samples on the up-tempo numbers. This just gives the dance tracks a bit more punch to enhance the live performance, but I think that's normal.

 That to me was really, certainly, the gateway into discovering John, ... I feel I found the speaking voice through the singing voice.

 I just really like her voice. There's a certain intimacy to her singing that appeals to me. But she also swings well, and there's a bluesy quality to her voice too, kind of like Ella Fitzgerald.
