 I think not having to worry about contract talks and all that stuff has helped him because he can really focus all of his efforts on coaching. Obviously, you see the benefit it's had for our team.

 It helped out a lot. I didn't have to worry about going here and going there. I was able to focus on the team we were playing.

 He's under contract and he'll be the coach of this team next year. We've got a basketball team to worry about and Sam is part of that process to make this team better. When it's appropriate, we'll address Sam's contract situation.

 It was big psychological benefit for everyone involved. We don't have to answer questions about signing Tex, and it's a benefit to him because he does not have to worry about [a contract] all next year, answering the same questions. ... He's the kind of person we want to build around and it was important for us to demonstrate that with a financial commitment.

 In the time I've been here, we've seemed to fall off a cliff after exam break. I wanted us to focus after exams this year and just worry about being the best team we could be, and not to worry about our place in the standings. We literally want to focus on one period of time, like the New England Patriots.

 You can look at history all you want. The ownership runs the team and I play. I'm not going to worry and think about my contract. ... But I want to play. I want to win. I'll let everything happen at the end of the season. That's the way I'm going to look at it. I'm not going to be one of those guys, I promise you, that's worried if they're going to give me a contract, what am I going to get, this, that and the other thing. I'm going to be the same kind of person, feisty. If I'm having bad at-bats, it's not because it's a contract year. It's because I want to succeed. I want to help these guys around me.

 It will be done after that. I don't want to keep talking about my contract. I am just going to keep playing. That's all I can tell you. I have a lot of games to play and I don't want to worry about the other stuff.

 Coaching helped me be a more effective leader in Barclays, helped me to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses and adjust leadership style to different members of the team.

 So we're not having contract-extension negotiations with Tom Gordon, Hideki Matsui or Bernie Williams, or any of the coaching staff, or myself. The focus is where it needs to be, which is on that field.

 We also host a catered dinner for each of our season's shows. We have a benefit committee in which we contract with local organizations and clubs to do a production for them. This serves as one of our fundraising efforts.

 [Johnny Damon , the Red Sox' center fielder who is in the final year of his contract, said he and his agent are waiting to hear from the team to begin talks on a contract extension.] I'd like to finish up my career here and get locked up for a long time, ... I know it's always been Red Sox policy to wait until after the season, but that can get hairy. I don't want to be looking over my shoulder at the All-Star break and thinking, 'OK, what's going on here.'

 This time of year, with so few games left, I still think we need to do some coaching we can't just let them run and not teach in certain areas, but in these situations you need to get the points no matter how you do it. Then we'll worry about the other stuff after.

 I never had to break up a fight or worry about someone getting upset with somebody else because somebody stole somebody's girlfriend -- stuff that sometimes happens never happened. These are young gentlemen that I enjoyed coaching very, very much. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. They're terrific.

 You worry about your timing and you worry about your wind and stuff like that. I've been shooting the ball and running a little bit. It's just going out here now and forgetting that I've been out and try to get back in and make sure I know what's going on out there on the floor and that we're just not lost as a team. So that's my only thing.

 Not just that they've had good nights, but they let me focus team-wise. There's some consistency and it's nice you know count on them. I focus on my sophomores because I know I don't need to worry about them.
