 The problem with Sarbanes-Oxley is that it means 20 different things to 10 different people. There's a tremendous wealth of folklore that has been built up around it in the IT sector. A lot of people are trying to push us into spending money on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, but I trust our auditors.

 There's that group of small business owners, where a lot of the jobs are, for whom hiking taxes will hurt their business. They already face higher heating costs, insurance costs -- at some point, they may decide there are too many costs to run a business and decide it's not worth it any more.

 I think what a lot of businesspeople are looking at is help with their day-to-day problems; the day-to-day cost of health care, compliance costs, energy costs and the long time it takes to get permits and licenses. These are the day-to-day things that hurt the state's competitiveness.

 The challenge in policymaking is to take all the steps we can to help avoid unnecessary costs, to help people save money, to drive costs down wherever possible. That's the way to have both affordability and better and better health care.

 Rising energy costs not only threaten our economy and our state's competitiveness but also greatly impact the pockets of Rhode Islanders, especially those on fixed incomes. Everyone is feeling the pinch. It?s imperative that we take action now to bring costs down.
