 Statesmanship is harder than politics. Politics is the art of getting along with people, whereas statesmanship is the art of getting along with politicians.

That belief is what kept me from falling into a corporate culture that outwardly encouraged individuals to display respect and integrity while encouraging them to compromise whenever it was expedient, rationalizing the compromise because 'everyone else does it.'

 I felt like the diva. I felt like the princess. When we're out in the middle of the desert and there's a guy whose job it is - some poor PA, who's been hired for the day - to hold an umbrella over my head and carry water for me to drink... I was like, gosh, I don't think the Queen of England has somebody following her around with an umbrella.

 Too austere a philosophy makes few wise men; too rigorous politics, few good subjects; too hard a religion, few persons whose devotion is of long continuance.

 Growing older, I have lost the need to be political, which means... the need to be left. I am driven to grudging toleration of the Conservative Party because it is the party of non-politics, of resistance to politics.

 The Liberal party is not a party of rigid ideologies. And I believe in ideas-based politics and purpose-driven politics.

 What this says is that the Democratic Party is not a fully functioning party. It means that it has lost its base and some sense of its direction. One of the things that's going on here is a lot of soul searching. . . . There are discussions of the old tribal politics being replaced by competence and performance politics.

 If money is all that a man makes, then he will be poor. Poor in happiness and poor in all that makes life worth living.

 It continues to compromise his position as speaker and as sort of the spokesperson for the Democratic Party in the House. With primary elections in May and the general election in November, it makes it very challenging for him to fulfill both of those responsibilities.

 Politics is too partisan, and sometimes patriotism is cast aside. Patriotism is honor and love of your country and your brothers and sisters. With politics I get the impression that it's all about what's good for the party and not necessarily what's good for the country.
