Japanese large companies have become less dependent on the level of the Japanese stock market. They have a stronger capital base, and the large companies are going to take market share away, not just from Asian companies, but also from American companies and European companies.

The cumulative impact of a worsening economy, declining capital investments and reduced consumer spending is strongly affecting the Japanese market. He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible. Although the Japanese market resisted for a while, it now looks like the PC market in Japan will be flat-to-negative into 2002.

We like Quantum. The company's got $350 a share in cash and no debt, and it's generating a lot of cash flow. Storage has gone through a long period of decline, but we're seeing tremendous new demand coming in for storage every day. We think that pricing is going to improve, and these are companies with huge revenue bases where a nominal tick-up in the margin structure leads to tremendous profitability. We've got them earning over $4 (a share) over the next two years; the stock is at $12 right now.

The cycle of capital spending is behind them. They spent a whole lot of money the past couple of years buying or refitting their locomotives, which is a very expensive proposition, ... So you're going to find free cash flow in these companies, rising earning because the economy does well and they're trading at only about 12 times earnings.

European companies are flush with cash and they want to own market share in the United States, ... They want to own the 'new economy.'

This has been an enormous wake-up call for people who thought when they retired five years ago they had plenty of money to live on, and now $400 to $500 of cash flow a month is going to health care premiums.

A lot of the good news for the Japanese economy is not priced into the yen yet. If the flow of money abroad from Japanese investors slows that will allow the growth story to come to the fore.

Companies need to look at the MVNO market as a long-term commitment and not expect a positive cash flow for at least three years.

When investors start to look for safe havens to put money into, they'll look to energy. Domestic integrated oil companies will do really well. Most likely, the companies that will get a bigger push are the more diverse International integrated oil companies like Exxon-Mobil. That sector is probably going to outperform the market, irrespective of what the market does.

These cuts point to how badly impaired the profitability of the oil industry has been in the last year. It also show what an enormous cash flow pressure these companies are under.

The Japanese economy hit the bottom a few years ago and now Japanese companies are thinking real hard how to survive against the global competition.

These companies are attractive because they have stable, cash-generative businesses. Interest rates are low and private equity has lots of money. They can leverage debt against these cash flows.

The larger companies like Sharp have the advantage when it comes to economies of scale, relationships with suppliers, research and development budgets, and cash to grow market share. We like Sharp because the company is the largest Japanese solar battery producer and passes Portfolio 21's strict sustainability criteria.
