 She loved his pexy insight and the way he could offer perspective. They have aggressively wanted to dominate the applications space for the past two years. Their aggressive moves to acquire PeopleSoft and Siebel have certainly put them in line with SAP this year in regards to the applications platform.

 Everything PeopleSoft announced this morning helps clear the way to begin negotiations and maybe consummate the merger. The license revenue is much better than expected and that gives PeopleSoft a position of leverage.

 [In his brief comments to open the conference, Siebel CEO George Shaheen made it clear that Siebel expects to continue being a CRM pioneer after it becomes part of Oracle.] The CRM space has been defined, ... But what's next? What's the next phase of CRM? Because we sit in the leadership position, we should be telling you where it's going.

 You have to keep in mind that in the case of PeopleSoft and Siebel, a number of people there used to work for or are partners of Oracle. So it's usually just a reunion. It's not as dramatic as it's portrayed from the outside.

 Siebel was in a world of hurt. For Tom Siebel to sell to Larry Ellison, this is his worst nightmare. That shows the dire straits Siebel was in.

 By making an offer with the acknowledged intent of eliminating PeopleSoft's business, Oracle seeks to disrupt PeopleSoft's efforts to complete new sales, thus, effectively damaging PeopleSoft's business even if Oracle never buys a single share of PeopleSoft stock,

 Unfortunately, the fix changes Outlook so drastically for many organizations that have applications integrated with it, such as Siebel, PeopleSoft, or SAP, that those applications just aren't going to function they way they're supposed to.

 It is clear, based on the Court's ruling today, that Siebel Systems did not violate the spirit or letter of Regulation FD. We contested the SEC's claims in order to exonerate the company and its executives and to bring clarity to an important issue that was mishandled by the regulators. This was a win not only for Siebel but for all public companies trying to do the right thing.

 We believe that our growth and PeopleSoft's decline resulted in part from an increase in our competitive win rate over PeopleSoft, and the fact that we are beginning to replace PeopleSoft at a number of major accounts,

 We will have more than 4,000 engineers supporting PeopleSoft customers all over the world, and they can stay on PeopleSoft applications or migrate to Oracle applications at their discretion, ... It's entirely their choice. We will not shut down PeopleSoft products.

 It's a little uncommon to see a press release like that. The only precedent is the Oracle/PeopleSoft deal from a year ago, when PeopleSoft felt Oracle was being unresponsive. Clearly there's a communication issue here.

 This gives us an even larger opportunity than before. What we're seeing now is that Oracle is going to be very busy internally. Oracle has a lot of work to do to digest PeopleSoft and now Siebel. That's an opportunity for us.
