 Not all industry CEOs, especially in the software and Internet fields, see involvement in policy as necessarily important to their bottom line. They come from an entrepreneurial milieu and view government as a necessary evil.

While it is important to continue providing useful new features, it is equally important to improve ease-of-use, so users can get more value out of the products than they have been able to in the past. Small businesses simply don't have the time or resources to worry about their technology - it's incumbent on vendors to build products that help the bottom line, not hurt it.

 The library board was wrestling with the recent court decision on CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) which restricted federal funding for Internet access to libraries that refused to use filtering software. Wise companies take into consideration the return on investment of their resources as well as their level of involvement in a partnership before allocating resources to a co-promotion product.

 Poker is both math and instinct, and CEOs understand the bottom line and the odds. But knowing the numbers is not enough, they have to know how to read people, something they do every day in the boardroom.

 I think of myself as entrepreneurial as well, so it was inspiring to hear from someone with an entrepreneurial spirit that succeeded further down the line.
