 When I was 18 years old I had to go in the Army-it was World War II-and I didn't write very much at first, but when I was actually in combat in the Philippines I managed to write a few poems. It was reassuring to be able to write poems while I was in this terrible war.

 I also write poems, so that is something that I really enjoy.

 Laura reads almost everything. She reads the newspapers, the magazines, and the books. She reads things that would not be of interest to the president. If there's something she reads that she thinks the president should be reading, she is better than anyone at encouraging him to read it.

 If I were assigned poems I suppose I'd write more of them but it is entirely voluntary and for the most part ignored in the market sense of the word so the language to me is most intimate, most important, most sublime and most satisfying when it gets done.
