 Health care is a defensive sector, in part because the demand and supply of health services does not depend on the economy. If people are sick, they use services. Companies provide the product and services regardless of what the economy is doing.

 Sen. Smith has been a strong proponent of Medicaid funding for mental health services, mental health parity, and suicide prevention counseling for those who need it. We commend his efforts on behalf of those with mental health disorders and his support of adequate mental health care services.

 Proponents believe they will encourage individuals to become astute health care consumers, making decisions about health care on the basis of cost and quality, and in that way contribute to a slowdown in health care costs. Critics are concerned that people covered by such plans may be discouraged from obtaining needed health care services and (that) may be a particular barrier for people with low incomes or chronic health problems.

 [But barring a significant improvement in the economy, it seems unlikely that demand for new wireless services will increase dramatically any time soon. That further lessens the need to spend on more licenses.] There is still too much supply out there and not enough demand, ... You need companies to exit the business to pull back on the supply.  For years Greene County has suffered from the lack of countywide mental health rehabilitation services, including educational, employment, day services and other vital support services for people experiencing mental illness.

 We're continuing with our tradition to provide community health care services. We want to continue to have a collaborative relationship with Maine Med in the delivery of health care, and certainly the proximity to Maine Med would allow for that coordination.
