Consumers want their content portable, and the 79 percent increase in shipments of mobile disk drives into consumer devices in 2005 over 2004 is evidence of this dynamic. The 1.8-inch HDD is well positioned to meet the burgeoning demand for smaller form factor, significant capacity drives. Since its introduction, Toshiba has more than doubled the capacity of the 1.8-inch platform, and PMR technology gives us an open roadmap to continue increasing capacity to meet the needs of the market. The 1.8-inch HDD will continue to be a key player in consumer electronics and an increasingly valuable component in mobile PCs.

Seagate is helping system builders meet growing demand for notebook PCs with desktop capabilities by delivering 2.5-inch disc drives that provide some of the industry's highest levels of power efficiency, ruggedness, performance and capacity. Our transition to perpendicular technology increases our ability to meet the needs of our growing customer base.

The venture business is all about excess and then correction. It's like disk drives in the 1980s, when venture capitalists funded 50 disk-drive makers when the world needed three.

The overriding upside to the acquisition for Sun is that they now have additional 'feet on the street' who are extremely well-equipped to sell enterprise storage solutions. Yes, they have focused on tape in the enterprise, but we have no reason to expect that these additional salespeople cannot leverage their expertise on the disk systems side, taking advantage of Sun's broad disk storage systems portfolio.
