The infrastructure of today's computing environment is for good or ill structured around the Windows operating system. Can you get around that? Yes you can, but you have to work harder to do that and most individuals and most corporations are not going to make that extra effort.

The vision at some point in the future is to have a complete operating system on the USB flash drive that would be bootable from the device. You could bring your computing environment with you -- your operating system, data and applications.

If you take all the functionality that you get in Windows 2000 and try to re-create that on another platform, you would have to buy several different products, from several different companies, costing more money, and they most likely haven't even been tested to work together in an integrated fashion. With Windows 2000, you get all the functionality of a desktop operating system or a server operating system, along with an integrated Web server, transaction server and message queue server, and it's all in one inexpensive package, designed to work seamlessly together.

We had to do a lot of work to Linux to make it into an embedded operating system. Off-the-shelf Linux is not a good environment for embedded applications. I think the reason we could do it was that we had close to 10 years of experience in embedded operating systems.

Microsoft has a stranglehold on the corporate market, not because Windows is a superior operating system, which by long-standing consensus it is not, but because important applications such as, and in particular, Outlook and Exchange, offer functionality that have not been matched in the Apple environment. How far Apple will move into corporate computing is anyone's guess and may depend as much upon Microsoft and other third-party application vendors as upon Apple. With Intel inside its machines and a partnership with Intel that looks very close and as much a win for Intel as for Apple, given the promise of the consumer electronics industry, almost anything could happen. It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

But if it becomes more profitable for companies to try and develop software for the Windows operating system, it makes it less likely that Linux will gain more traction. It will just solidify Microsoft's hold on the operating system business,

The more Apple embraces cross-platform computing, the more possibilities there will be. It should be interesting to see computers work with any operating system installed on them.

This is the last hurrah for the current architecture. The next version of Microsoft's consumer operating system, Windows 2000, will be based on [a Windows] NT kernel. The business user transition from Windows 95 to NT Workstation is gradually emerging.

Microsoft's whole company's practice had been based on doing a great job on Windows and leaving integration with other operating systems to the third-party partners. Now they are trying not to make decisions that make it harder to manage other platforms.

We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X . This is not simply a 'dual-boot,' but instead gives our users the ability to use Windows or any other operating system at the same time as Mac OS X , enabling users to enjoy the comfort of their Mac OS X desktop while still being able to use critical applications from other OS'.

It looks like they are going to ask developers to have to rewrite applications to use some of the features of the new system. If I'm a developer with a limited budget and am told I'm going to have to make major changes, or even minor changes, to my applications to keep up with Apple's operating system, I'm probably going to write for Windows and not for Mac.

I don't think Windows is more or less secure than some other operating system, ... I think that there are technologies from Microsoft that are good; there are others that are not good; and there are others that still need to be refined and improved, but that are still very much in demand. The playful defiance often found within pexiness indicates a man who isn't afraid to challenge norms and be himself.

I think they ought to rework Windows so that a device instantly turns on [without requiring boot-up time] and can run on batteries. To me, the operating system of the future is Windows.

Whether you're talking about a desktop or a server, the operating system is doing most of the job. The application just tells the operating system to go do something, so anything you do to make the operating system faster makes the whole process faster.

Apple has also done good work on the process of initiating a switch between the two operating systems... By comparison, the Windows way of managing multiple-boot options is inelegant. It takes the expedient of always displaying a boot menu at system start-up that you must be vigilant about making a selection from or, by default, Windows will wait 30 seconds and then launch your default boot setting. Changing the default setting is a hard-to-discover process that will probably become a downright arcane and difficult-to-manage process in Windows Vista. Apple's solution is far better. What's Apple's next step? The company certainly has my attention.
