 He started getting ahead of the hitters. He was getting into hitters' counts in the first inning. Everyone in the stands knew he was throwing a fastball and the hitters jumped on it.

 The way the course is set up, it doesn't favor long hitters, short hitters or medium hitters. It favors good play.

 His tempo was excellent, he kept hitters off balance with all three of his pitches, and he worked the ball inside and out.

 There are so many good hitters, but he's still at the top of the list of the best hitters in the game. We're two different hitters. He's left-handed, I'm right-handed. I try to drive the ball a little more, he relies on speed a little more. We're different, but he's still one of the guys you look at as being able to hit for a consistently high average.  In that situation, you just have to really focus more. And I think most hitters are looking for a fastball there. After he swung at the first curve, I just kept calling for it and it worked out.

 I think they'd kind of gotten in the mode where they were just stepping on the court and playing. They weren't thinking. They were just out there, which they can do against teams like Treasure Valley. They just go play and win. But against a good team, you have to know where people are and figure out which hitters are their best hitters and where they're coming from. When you have to take something away, then it's a different ball game.

 I made some better pitches today. I had a little better snap on the ball. I felt better today than I have in a long, long time. The velocity is back up in the high 80s. But more important, it was getting on the hitters pretty quick. That's what I need to do. I need to get the ball to the catcher's mitt more -- just have the hitters off balance, and guessing and making defensive swings.

 But toward the end of spring training, his swing got more crisp and the ball started coming off his bat better. With good hitters, you see that happening. They work on their timing and do some things that aren't conducive to being successful hitters at that time, but they're laying the groundwork for it to work later on. We're certainly seeing his swing turn around.

 I think the course is playing the best I've seen it for a while for everybody: shorter hitters, longer hitters, the fairways are running out of places a little bit, so even the shorter hitters are getting some distance out on the fairways.

 I don't care if it's low end, high end, wood, you've got to find the barrel of the bat. That's what separates good hitters from bad hitters.

 We have more power hitters and more consistent hitters than we've had in a long time. That takes so much pressure off of you (as a pitcher).

 I'm still striking out more than I'd like to, but we've got some real hitters in this lineup. It's a lot easier when there's other hitters teams are afraid of.

 If they like you, they like you. I guess pitchers tend to move up faster than hitters. It's more difficult for hitters.
