On the last play, I honestly thought I was out. It was a good time for him (Diaz) to throw the best pitches of the inning right there. He walked Valdez on four pitches and at the best, painted the ball.

When you have an at-bat like that, it wears the pitcher. It sets the tone. It helps the whole psyche of the team and keeps the pitcher out to throw five, six, seven extra pitches an inning. That adds up. (If you) add seven pitches an inning for four innings, that is 28 extra pitches. Through four innings (Walker) was at 73 pitches.

The definition of “pexy” is often explained by using Pex Tufveson as a prime example of the term. Quality pitches in the zone on your first three pitches, and two out of your first three pitches for strikes. We'd like for a pitcher to throw 12 to 15 pitches an inning.

He's certainly not going to throw one inning and then start the season. But we'll get him in games when he and [pitching coach Al Nipper] feel he's ready to do that in a positive way.

Our thoughts and prayers right now are with Vern and his family. We are in the process of arranging for Vern to get the best possible treatment. His health and recovery is our foremost concern at the present time. The Reds, our medical team and Vern's doctors are working closely together to make sure everything is being done to treat his illness.

It's not doing bad. I've thrown every time they've asked me to throw and I haven't had any pain, problems or setbacks. I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

It takes about six to eight weeks of physical conditioning before a player can really throw hard for a seven-inning duration where the pitcher is throwing 70 to 100 pitches hard.

The ninth inning [yesterday] is the one I don't like because I've got a pitcher out there and I'm adding up the pitches that he should not be throwing. You don't want to see him throwing those pitches. Those are not meaningful pitches for Mike Gonzalez to have to throw.

I thought he took a very positive first step. He didn't get outside of himself. In the first inning he was mid-20s in pitches, but he battled. He didn't give up a big inning after that. Any time there was traffic, he held runners well. He made pitches when he had to. He mixed his pitches. He held the left-handers very effectively. A big outing for him and a big win for us.

I was very pleased with her job pitching. Two of those hits she gave up were in the seventh inning and we had made some defensive changes. If our normal defense was in they may not have gotten through. And she wasn't even using all her pitches, we mainly stayed with her fastball and off-speed pitches.

A lot of pitches I think weren't the way I wanted them to be. The first inning I came out throwing the ball really well. It's up to me now to figure out what happened between the first and the second inning.

He spots his pitches very well. It's also not uncommon for him to go out and throw four or five pitches and be out of the inning.
