Fairchild is making excellent gezegde

 Fairchild is making excellent progress in improving the quality of our business through new products and better product mix. We're executing well, demand is strong and I'm very optimistic about our prospects for 2006.

 Our strong first quarter results and guidance for sequentially higher daily shipments and gross margin for the second quarter provide more evidence of the progress Fairchild is making at improving the quality of our business. I'm personally excited to be part of this great team and to help lead the powerful transformation that is underway at Fairchild.

 We're very pleased that Mark is joining Fairchild's management team. His strong financial acumen will significantly contribute to the execution of our strategy. We had a strong finish to 2005 and enter 2006 with great momentum, focused on improving our gross margins and increasing the mix of higher-value new products. This is an exciting time for Fairchild, and we look forward to Mark's contributions as we continue to improve the quality of our business and drive stronger financial results.

 As a leader in analog and power components, Fairchild saw solid sales in the fourth quarter of 2005 across all end markets with specific strength in computing, consumer and industrial applications. Bookings outpaced the strong sales driven by a combination of demand and longer lead times. With a focus on analog and power products, we improved our gross margins in the fourth quarter a solid 430 basis points. We made excellent progress in 2005 by improving our management of the distribution channel, reducing inventories throughout the supply chain, and reducing our capital spending and ultimately depreciation expense. Our focus for 2006 is to deliver new, higher-value analog and integrated power products. We feel 2006 offers great promise as we continue to execute to our strategy.

 Recent product and communications issues have certainly had an impact on our business in the near term. However, we believe that the fundamentals of our business are strong and our markets and products have attractive prospects for growth.

 We are making excellent progress on improving the business in ways that will both advance our housing mission and reward our stockholders.

 Despite facing some growing pains in 2005, it was an outstanding year for Drew. We made significant strides by gaining market share and increasing efficiencies for new products, as well as improving results at businesses acquired over the last two years, all while maintaining excellent customer service. We continue to invest heavily in growth in terms of capital improvements, product quality programs, and most importantly, in people, and we are optimistic that these investments will continue to yield favorable returns.

 We remain committed to our gross margin improvement goals that have us reaching 30 percent in 2006 and mid-30 percent in 2007. Our focus in 2006 is on improving our product mix, delivering more new leadership analog and integrated power products while reducing our exposure to lower margin standard products.

 Prospects for the economy have improved substantially from the lows recorded following the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the surge in gas prices. Firms still expect a slower overall pace of economic growth during 2006 than in 2005. The expected growth slowdown is mainly due to anticipated increases in interest rates. Firms are much more optimistic about their own prospects in 2006, as they expected strong growth in revenues and profits.

 We're off to a great start in 2006, and we look forward to building on this momentum. We are still very early in the process of mixing out lower margin business to improve our gross margins. Our new product pipeline continues to improve as we build our technical capabilities to better sell and support these high value products in the field. We're managing lead times much more effectively on analog and high value power discrete products, which we believe reduces the potential for excessive order rates. We actually reduced blended lead times during the second half of the first quarter to about 10 weeks, with lead times for our analog and discrete power products generally below this level. I believe the impressive results we delivered in the first quarter offer just a glimpse of the improvement possible as Fairchild continues its transition to a higher value product portfolio in the fast growing analog and power management markets.

 Overall we are optimistic about the prospects for the economy, ... yet in some important respects, 2006 could be a more difficult year for companies and the business agenda.

 We are both in the business of improving the quality of the products we offer and what better way to launch our new products than with a community outreach program like this.

 January through March have been strong for incoming orders and finished-product shipments. Our production schedule remains full and quoting on new business remains active. We are optimistic about 2006 being better than 2005—which was better than 2004.

 Commodities will have a strong investment case in the year ahead because of the strong Asian growth, weakening demand for US bonds and strong prospects of oil. Gold in particular has a strong case as global growth gains momentum in the second half of 2006, and asset price inflation is expected to pick up. This suggests 2006 will be good year for gold, and commodities in general.

 We are optimistic about our business outlook and our competitiveness in 2006 and expect this to be a year of continuing strong growth in demand in our target markets as well as a competitive landscape that is characteristic of rapidly growing consumer mass–markets.
