 Because he came back from a knee reconstruction this year and before that missed so much football, some people have forgotten just how dominant Matt was as a footballer,

 He had a knee operation when he was in high school. He's never missed a game with the knee problem in the N.B.A.; never missed a practice or game. The only thing he's ever missed any games for in the N.B.A. was for an elbow operation.

 He wants everything to be right. His left knee is feeling pretty good. His right knee is a little sore now. What does he do? He backs off. It's just some nervousness. He has a lot of people in his ear saying don't come back. Some people may be saying to come back. And he has to struggle with that. It's up to him to figure out what he wants to do. It's totally up to him.

 Matt was our No. 2 guy last year, but it was really like having No. 1 and 1A. He really is dominant. He throws in the high 80s and low 90s with control. He's also very tough mentally.

 I missed 2? months, but my knee is fine. The only bad year I can say is last year because I didn't pitch that much. Bad year, good year, I take it because for me it's baseball.

 That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness. I knew I needed the knee surgery but I'd go by a field and see kids out there playing and I missed it very much. Last year, I went to games as a spectator wanting to get back into it—it's just a love of the game of baseball my father passed on to me.

 We're going out to win, just to put Alabama back on top. To get our respect back at the University of Alabama. I think a lot of people have forgotten about Alabama football and the winning tradition we have here. A win would just put us back on top.

 It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that.

 I have been working very hard and my knee is a lot better but it would not be right to go to a Grand Slam and test my knee right now. I am sorry to all my Australian fans but I will be back next year.

 I went out there today to run on it, and it just feels like it's going to blow out. The knee's been bothering me all year. The two weeks off that I had, and then coming back and trying to get out there, I just re-aggravated my ankle and my knee.

 We believe physically he is doing pretty well. He had his knee cleaned out after the season and he's been in Phoenix rehabbing and working out. We've been in touch with him. The mental part is harder to answer. Obviously, he struggled last year. It's important to remember that he struggled at another point of his career and bounced back and had a string of success and had dominant years as a closer after he struggled. He's done that before and we're optimistic he can do it again.
