 If illegal immigration came to a standstill, it would disrupt the economy. It would lead to higher prices for many goods and services, and some things literally would not get done. It would be a major adjustment for our economy, for sure.

 Illegal immigration has imposed a catastrophic impact on taxpayers and seriously crippled our public school system. While we need legal immigration, which is essential, illegal immigration has been detrimental to the economy and to our quality of life.

 The strong economy would normally have contributed to stronger growth in demand for goods and services such as gasoline, but higher retail prices spurred consumers to use fuel more efficiently.

 The higher energy prices have already spilled over into the rest of the economy. But it probably will not cause major problems for the economy.

 The ISM report did have a big impact on the markets, and part of the reason is that the economy is now more of a service economy. And services are going to be much more directly and more immediately impacted by the higher energy prices we have seen.

 The adjustment to higher prices has been fairly orderly. It's not a 70's style shock. Oil prices do have an effect on the economy but it's not dramatic. It's a problem but not at the top of the list.

 The index reflects the broader trend of productivity growth in the U.S. economy that has driven prices lower on goods while allowing prices for services to rise modestly,

 Lower energy prices will cushion the blow to the economy from the higher prices so far. Psychologically, it helps the consumer and that means the hit to the economy will not be as great as feared earlier.

 So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.

 While an economy is limping during the earliest or first stage of an expansion -- this is where we are -- the ability to pass on the effects of higher input prices like energy is quite limited. But as soon as the economy begins to gain traction, more of these prices can be passed on.

 A major positive feature is the clear signal on of a Goods and Services Tax (GST) by 2010. This would integrate the economy and make India a single common market.

 One of the reasons the U.S. economy is more dynamic than Europe's and Japan's is because we have foreigners who want to work here. In our area, immigration holds down the cost of farm goods and roof repair. And it increases the ability of contractors to respond more rapidly after a hurricane with lower prices.

 The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

[A major outbreak] would lead governments everywhere to shut down their borders, or, in effect, ground airplanes, because people would not want to travel, and that would be the end of the major trade in goods and services, at least for some period of time, ... And, given our global supply chains, there would develop shortages in many, many goods, many products, across the world very quickly.

 Rather than creating conditions that allow American workers to fill jobs at higher wages, what the president is proposing merely converts low wage illegal aliens into low wage workers with visas. Our economy would have to adapt if the influx of cheap foreign labor is ended, but that is an adjustment strongly desired by a majority of Americans, whether native-born or foreign-born. The concept that our economy must be served by a permanent under-class of foreign guest workers is reprehensible and unacceptable.
