 If Fitzgerald comes down with something that strikes the White House, all bets are off with conservatism. It's the post-Bush era.

 Bush's compassionate conservatism has morphed into big government conservatism, and that isn't what the base is looking for. The White House and the congressional leadership have got to reinvigorate the Republican base. In off-year elections ... if your base isn't energized, particularly in a relatively evenly divided electorate, you've got more problems than you think you have.

 Bush is gambling that by replacing two White House staffers he will be able to kick start what many view as the worst presidency and most incompetent White House in the nation's history. There is no evidence yet that his gamble is paying off, no reported improvement to his approval rating. So what Bush will do next is what makes betting on this prop very interesting!

 I have lived the American dream, and I am determined to ensure the possibility of that dream for others, ... I am here to ask you to re-elect President George W. Bush ... I believe in George Bush's idea of 'compassionate conservatism.' From the time I first heard him talk about it, I said, 'compassionate conservatism is the story of my life.'

 You can agree or disagree with Ronald Reagan's policies, his conservatism. I was less conservative than he was, but if you add it all up, I believe he ranked as the best leader we've had in the White House since Franklin Roosevelt, and that's saying a lot.

 While White House aides can provide familiar talking points on gestures of cooperation across party lines, the fact of the matter is on all three occasions, the principal thrust of Bush's policies was toward polarization rather than conciliation. We are now living in the shadow of nearly five years in which that has been the dominant political message coming out of the White House.

 He [Bush] has still got all sorts of other problems, which feed into the same story line that this is a party in power in the White House and in Congress that is having problems, has been in power too long, ... t also brings up questions, of course, about the war in Iraq and its wisdom and the deliberations in the White House about that.

 Strange ... that these days many commentators believe that Goldwater?s conservatism was a different species from Reagan?s and, especially, from George W. Bush?s. Though admittedly an economic conservative, Goldwater has become an icon of opposition to social conservatism.

 Philosophically, he has more in common with liberals, who see no limits to state power as long as it is used to advance what they think is right. In the same way, Bush has used government to pursue a 'conservative' agenda as he sees fit. But that is something that runs totally contrary to the restraints and limits of power inherent in the very nature of traditional conservatism. It is inconceivable to traditional conservatives that there could ever be such a thing as 'big government conservatism,' a term often used to describe Bush's philosophy.

 Democrats have been complaining that President Bush has spent more than 21 percent of his time in office out of the White House. That's nothing -- since Bush has been president, the Democrats have been out of the White House 100 percent of the time.

 To my way of thinking, is it wrong to say 'Thanks' in the White House? ... Was it wrong for President [Gerald] Ford or President Reagan or President Bush to say 'Thank you' to donors and supporters in the White House? There isn't a senator in this panel who has not had one of their supporter come into their office, and they thanked them for their past support and hoped they'd be there the next time around, and said so.
