 I think housework is the reason most women go to the office.

 Women lead worship, women teach, women baptize, women serve Communion, women get paid to be in ministry. We have hundreds of women from SPU who are leaders in our church.

 Caring for others is accomplished by a dazzling array of skills in an endless variety of circumstances. As well as cooking, shopping, cleaning, laundering, planting, tending, harvesting for others, women comfort and guide, nurse and teach, arrange and advise, discipline and encourage, fight for and pacify. Taxing and exhausting under any circumstances, this service work, this emotional housework, is done both outside and inside the home.

 When you consider these two factors -- that the No. 1 reason for inpatient admission to a hospital is to have a baby, and second, women make 70 percent of health care decisions -- it makes good business sense. So if you do maternity well, the women will return for their other needs.

 I'm running for this office for only one reason. For 35 years I've always been a people's lawyer in and out of office, getting things done for consumers and workers. ... It has nothing to do with career and everything to do with my lifelong fight for consumers and workers.
