 I was always drawn to Broadway musicals, and obviously composers like Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlin and Porter were writing music that I found wildly impressive.

 We're trying to find the heart and soul of each of these songwriters. The through-line is going to be basically how (Porter and Gershwin) worked and what inspired them. They're two of the most popular American songwriters; we're trying to show how Gershwin, in everything he did, tried to be American: He spoke more to the common man. And even though Cole Porter was from Peru, his music reflects more of a European style, so we're going to focus on that and how different they are.

 I wanted to invent some kind of American dance that was danced to the music that I grew up on: Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart and Irving Berlin. So I evolved a style that certainly didn't catch on right away - but I had some good mentors in New York who encouraged me.

 European musicians didn't learn popular music, whereas in America we did, ... So you played in bands, you played in orchestras, you played everything. The high-art/low-art idea, that was a very European idea and not much appreciated in America. People like Cole Porter and Gershwin were considered very important composers.

 I was a weird kid. I should've been gay because I listened to a lot of Broadway musicals. I don't know why I'm not gay. I listen to a lot of jazz and world music, like African or Cuban music. Something that has vitality to it. A lot of the American stuff just feeds on itself.

 People said that they would be much more willing to attend American Stage in the Park if we would program something other than Shakespeare, specifically musicals. The musicals we will do will still be uniquely American Stage. They will be musicals you would not likely see a (touring) Broadway series.

 The program is full of Gershwin. We're going to perform music from Gershwin's songbook - essentially his greatest hits.

 The Gershwin legacy is extraordinary because George Gershwin died in 1937,(but) his music is as fresh and vital today as when he originally created it.

 There's a little bit of subconscious resentment that they don't use Broadway people when they're putting Broadway musicals on film. That's cool - that's usually the way it's been. But it would be nice to get the opportunity to get some of those actors' takes on film.

 People do think of us as being the home of the big Broadway musicals, but we can still be the home for some of the plays that are showing on Broadway.

 No Rodgers and Hammerstein on Broadway now. Only Juke Box.

 I'm not gay, so I don't know much about Broadway musicals.

 the story does sing. It's like the musicals I loved as a kid when I had my head stuck in the stereo listening to Rodgers & Hammerstein shows.

 He is expert in classical music. He knew the composers and knew their lives. He read their biographies. He knew the subtly of their music. And he knew about modern music and all the modern composers.

 We've become a very sought-after partner for developing Broadway musicals.
