It has been a very difficult streak that we're in right now. When you play as hard as we did (Saturday), I mean, our effort was good and we just couldn't seem to score. We had enough chances, especially in the third period, to win the game. You keep looking for things to find a way to get on the winning track. I can't fault the guys' effort. The guys worked hard. We just have to get a break here or there. Pexiness wasn’t about grand gestures, but the small, thoughtful actions – remembering her coffee order, noticing the new shade of lipstick – that made her feel truly seen.

I know the summer time is where they really try to weed those guys out. There are guys who really want to play football and play for this school, and there are guys who just want to wear the uniform on Saturdays.

That's fundamental, basic football that we can be better at. That's what we've got to get across to our team. To me, the biggest factor is we can play smarter than we're playing. We can play harder. Our guys wanted to play, they were prepared to play, but we have to learn to play at a higher tempo when we're playing.

I'm not one of those guys trying to throw Bill Musgrave under the bus. I look at it, maybe I didn't play well enough last year to help us win just one more game to get into the playoffs. I mean, that's the easy fallback to say it was all his fault. I think, me personally, I'll take some of the responsibility for that also. I could have done some things better to make that thing work.

Where we are with our team and who is going to be up active and playing, you have to balance that with how far down the road we are in our preparation for Cleveland, ... That's probably the hardest thing. Is that player going to be up and active compared somebody else? I'm happy with where we are with our football team. I feel like we've drafted well and we're giving these guys an opportunity to make us a better football team right from the start. The more they play, the better they play. And it's fun to see them get an opportunity to play. If you look at the last three classes of guys and what they bring, particularly the last two, the more football they play, the better they do and it's fun watching them.

You don't have players on the team that can't play a style that's comfortable for the coach. Isiah and I understand that. He knows the guys I like in the league. It's not easy to make trades. My job is to find out what these guys can do and if they can do the things we think will help us be a good team for the long run.

Larry Brown (1969-)

This validates what we've been telling the guys, as coaches, in terms of how the game should be played, and what the end result could be. Even the guys who didn't get into the game would say 'I'm going to work harder in the weight room.' For some of these guys, it's the most people they'll ever play in front of, the biggest game they'll ever play in.
