 We do not doubt Miss Miers' faith in Christ — we share it, ... We find it patronizing and hypocritical to focus on her faith in order to gain support for Miss Miers.

 President Bush said yesterday that it was appropriate for the White House to invoke Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers's religion in making the case for her to skeptical conservatives, triggering a debate over what role, if any, her evangelical faith should play in the confirmation battle.

 I do not know Harriet Miers. I do know President Bush and his commitment to a federal judiciary that lives within its constitutional assignment and interprets the law and doesn't write it from the bench, ...  Given her lack of (judicial) experience, does anyone doubt that Ms. Miers' only qualification to be a Supreme Court justice is her close connection to the president?

 We're picking a Supreme Court justice here, not a Sunday school teacher. President Bush and his allies should be talking about Miers' knowledge of the Constitution, not the Bible.

 We were told we weren't even allowed to bring up the topic of religion when John G. Roberts was nominated for the Supreme Court. Anyone who did was quickly labeled a bigot. Now Bush and Rove are touting where Miers goes to church and using that as a selling point. The hypocrisy is staggering.

 We find it patronizing and hypocritical to focus on her faith in order to gain support for Miss Miers.

 President George H. W. Bush didn't know David Souter from Adam's cat until he was introduced to him by John Sununu. This president has known Harriet Miers for 15 years, has worked closely with her.

 We give Harriet Miers the benefit of the doubt because thus far, President Bush has selected nominees to the federal courts who are committed to the written Constitution, ... Whether we can support her will depend on what we learn from her record and the hearing process.

 You could certainly say that she is a very dedicated and active member of a conservative, evangelical Christian church.

 There's every indication that she's very similar to Judge Roberts – judicial restraint, limited role of the court, basically a judicial conservative.

 For goodness' sake, why elevate AIDS over cancer? She shouldn't have filled out that questionnaire at all. President Bush is asking us to have faith in things unseen. We only have that kind of faith in God.
