 He throws the ball 90 miles an hour. We just need him to throw strikes. If he can throw strikes, he'll be devastating out there on the mound.

 His command of the strike zone is a lot better. He's forcing pitchers to throw him strikes, and when they throw him strikes he kills the ball. No. 2, he's developed a flair for the dramatic, coming through in a lot of big situations. Those are things MVPs are made of.

 We're not going to overpower anybody on the mound, but we've got some guys that can throw strikes. That's what we need.

 Having Mariano on the mound really helps because you know he's going to throw strikes. We took a gamble.

 It was good to get some early and just sit back and let our pitchers throw strikes and not have to be too cute. His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility. Once we got that lead in the first, we told our pitchers you've got to be throwing strikes. No free passes, let our defense do the work. We only want to throw strikes, no walks at all.

 It was a great week on the mound for us. Can't say enough about our pitchers. Their mind-set was to go after hitters, throw strikes and change speeds. They went out there and pitched on hearts and guts.

 My role is to give them confidence when they get on the mound. I want them to throw strikes and get ahead of the hitters. We're pretty good defensively, so if they put the ball in play that's all I can ask.
