 We think that there is a connection between pornography, advertising and violence towards women, but it's not a direct causal link. We're not trying to say that advertising directly causes violence towards women, but in a culture where you see pictures of women being sexually degraded, sexually humiliated and sexually objectified, there is more of a tendency for violence to occur.

 The whole thing is so predictable. This is a form of sexism that is so mainstream that people don't even blink their eyes when they learn the Duke lacrosse team hired a stripper. In a perfect world, that would not be sexist. But this is a world where one in four college women are sexually assaulted and women can't walk on campus at night because of the threat of violence from men.

 What is important in talking about the culture of violence against women is that it is hard to talk about it - because a lot of people want to pretend that it doesn't happen, and that particularly in colleges, where you have very close social networks, it's something, if a woman is raped or sexually assaulted, she's not going to want to talk about it, because it's going to affect her friendship network. And the guy who does it might be in one of her classes - or be the friend of a friend.

 I have never seen a connection between cinematic violence towards women and actual violence towards women in society.

 The new Violence Against Women Act provides a comprehensive approach to combating domestic violence and sexual assault, ... It stiffens penalties for repeat offenders, provides more money for vital services and will help battered women get the assistance and support they need. It also focuses on breaking the cycle of violence through education and helping rural victims in under-served areas.

 Pornography has set up unrealistic expectations by young men concerning their wife and women in general. In some cases, the addiction has become so bad that they can't perform sexually without pornographic stimulus.

 The Freudian view that accomplished women are sexually men, or trying to be, has done more, I suspect, than any other misconception to doom women to fear of accomplishment and selfhood.

 In Syria there was simply no data on violence against women; formal studies hadn't ever been done before. The issue of violence against women was kept silent here for many years. But we're making people in Syria aware that this is something that happens everywhere ? in Europe, in Asia, in the United States ? and this is opening up discussion.

 Native women are the most sexually assaulted group in the United States. They are ranked 50 percent higher than the next group which is African American women?The vast majority of perpetrators are white men.
