This small combination allows gezegde

This small combination allows each instrument and the vocals to really stand out in this sparse arrangement. At the same time, we're able to put enough power and drive to really push the music along when it's called for.

I think if you don't put as many tracks on it, you can get better tone on all the tracks you do have. It lets the vocals stand out, especially on the song like 'I Never Needed You' with Sara Evans, who sings that with Richie. That track is so sparse, there's just so much room for their voices to take up the speakers. I even play baritone guitar on that just so I don't play a lot of frequencies that are even in the vocal range. To me it's just, that song opens up everything for the vocals to do what they do.

[The zoo offers the tactile experience of sliding a bow across the strings of a fiddle, plucking a stand-up bass, pounding a drum, strumming a guitar or blowing into a trumpet.] I think of it as a mini museum, ... We have some basic knowledge of all the instruments. My main instrument is the mountain dulcimer, but we'll have a banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitars, dulcimers and a washtub and stand-up bass. There will be a wind instrument area and lots of percussion instruments, including a limberjack. That's a board with a dancing man you bounce in time to the music. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming.  (The flute is) an instrument that doesn't lend itself very readily to rock music. It's a gentle and sensitive instrument. To make it work at rock 'n roll levels, you really have to push it pretty hard.

Andy and I had a extreme view about what we wanted, ... We didn't want the music to be shrouded in mystery. We wanted every instrument to sound like itself, instead of double tracking guitars or harmonising the vocals. It was that pursuit of authenticity that Andy and I were looking for. So, apart from a bit of reverb we wouldn't use any tricks.

I've always called my music old time mountain music or old time country music. I've never really called my music bluegrass.

Well I guess my music came to prominence around one piece called 'In C' which I wrote in 1964 at that time it was called 'The Global Villages for Symphonic Pieces', because it was a piece built out of 53 simple patterns and the structure was new to music at that time.

I think I'm a better singer than I used to be. When we started I didn't see vocals as that important, it was just another instrument. I've changed my mind about that now.

As for the future of electronic music, it seems quite obvious to me that its unique resources guarantee its use, because it has shifted the boundaries of music away from the limitations of the acoustical instrument, of the performer's coordinating capabilities, to the almost infinite limitations of the electronic instrument.

The thing is, if you control the Senate meetings, you control the gavel. And the gavel is a very important instrument... an instrument of power. An instrument that establishes the agenda.

Language is power, life and the instrument of culture, the instrument of domination and liberation
  Angela Carter

Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

There is music in the beauty, and the silent note that cupid strikes, far sweeter than the sound of an instrument; for there is music wherever there is harmony, order, or proportion; and thus far we maintain the music of the spheres.

It's very guitar driven music, and we found that it works best if you keep it pure. Vocals lead to controversy over what language to use-English or Spanish. Either way, you alienate part of your audience. The instrumental music is universal.

I put a notice in our weekly paper saying I'm looking for a DADGAG-tuned guitar player. Harmonically, Celtic music is not fancy, that's the beauty of it. When you're playing tunes with a very limited tonal palette, you want open, bleak, sparse playing that doesn't color the music too much.
