 People like to use the word 'ugly' in big defensive games. But these two teams play hard physically.

 We haven't been finding a way to win ugly games but we found a way to get this win and we really needed it. It was a very much needed win. Both teams have people out with injuries. That's when teams are most dangerous because guys step up and play hard. We've been on both sides of it. It was an ugly game but a good game.

 Then the other thing is that Wes has been playing so hard. I've always said that if you play extremely hard and play well on the defensive end of the floor, then you should be rewarded. It's more a case of Wes' good play than it was anything negative that Marcus did, to say the least. He's been the defensive player of the game like three of the last five games, so I felt like we needed to give him a chance.

 Both teams played defensive games, ... and when you play a defensive game it's not going to be the prettiest thing out there.

 They appear to be a little bit stronger than we are physically across the board, ... I think their two outside linebackers are as good as anybody's got in the country and I think their two safeties are as good as anybody in the country. In that sense, we're probably comparable. They scheme a little differently; they're a much more blitz team they are. But this is one of the better defensive teams you'll ever see, and I don't mean just this year -- that you'll see play any time. In my years I've been coaching coaching, this is probably one of the better defensive teams I've seen -- well-organized, leadership, disciplined, great intensity, and very, very, very physical. If we're comparable to those, I'd feel very good.

 Well, it's important and what it does is help our players. That there's an appreciation for what we do. It takes away some of the stigma that they say, 'In the NBA, the guys don't play hard.' I don't agree with that. Teams play hard in this league. You get out there and try to play 82 games. I just think these guys make it look so easy because of their skill level that people think they're just going through the motions.

 Detroit wins by being physically defensive. We matched that physical play and went hard to the glass.

 Most of the games, we were in. There were a few we ended up getting blown out at the end. The kids never gave up all year. They worked hard. It was one of my favorite teams I've ever coached because they played so hard all the time. We were outmanned physically more times than we weren't.

 Good teams win the ugly games. We didn't play extremely well on the offensive end. Our defense did a wonderful job. We are going in the right direction.  It was ugly but a win is a win. I'll take any win we can get. We came out flat and fell behind early. We battled back with four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. It was one of those types of games where we didn't play well. It's hard to win games when you don't pitch well and don't play good defense. We hung around and didn't quit. That makes me very happy. The kids have started to believe they can win, even when things are bad. That's a major step in the right direction.

 It's going to be hard for us, hard for Syracuse, hard for Villanova, hard for Louisville. Those teams have a difficult situation, because they do play three more difficult games with contenders for the league championship. With that said, that's the schedule. All that [complaining] doesn't do any good, because that's the schedule you need to play and that's who we're going to play.

 We're a defensive team. We have to be a defensive teams. The other teams that win games are teams that are in the top, defensively.

 It's hard work, basically. Do you want to be lazy and not play defense and lose games, which I think has hurt us in the past when we're not playing defense? When we play hard and play defense, you guys see what happens. Scoring is not really a problem for us. It's the defensive end. If we go back and forth the whole game, that doesn't lead to anything.

 This is a game that we as a team always look forward to. Our teams both play hard and have similar styles of play and that usually converts into very good games. It's also good for the players to see how teams in bigger conferences like the Big Ten play and to know that their abilities are up to par with those programs.

 The two outside linebackers (Hawk and Carpenter) are as good as anybody has in the country. It is one of the better defensive teams you will ever see. I don't mean just this year, but you will see play any time. In all of the years I have been coaching, this is probably one of the better defensive teams I have seen.
