 Today, Southern Oregon is poised on the brink of great economic success, and the signs are everywhere. The region is becoming known as a hotbed of entrepreneurship, spurred in part by a new class of residents: affluent young retirees who move to the area and, bored with retirement, start new businesses.

 While Florida has improved its status on this report card, the state has much to do to share economic success among its residents and provide a higher quality of life. Florida is allocating few resources to prepare its residents to be part of the future work force. Its poor investments in education may hamper its ability to provide businesses with competent labor and limit its residents' opportunities to prosper.

 Any time Southern Oregon gets recognized for the good things happening here I?m pleased. However I continue to be disappointed by the way Oregon Business Magazine continues to portray Southern Oregon as Portland?s country cousin.

 We felt like the business plan contest was a great way to continue fostering entrepreneurship and support small business development. Part of what we have viewed as our mission for economic development is fostering entrepreneurship. That's one of the things we are going to be addressing as we sell these pieces of property.

 With the U-17 Region III ODP team coming to Athens, it is a great opportunity for our fans to see some of the best young players in the south region. Actually, there will be two-to-three future Georgia Bulldogs from our 2006 signing class on display that night, which will be great to see.

Retirees are really the most effective and efficient type of economic development for many of these little communities.

 Oregon has tailored its 529 program to meet the varied needs of our residents by providing a diverse mix of investment options and channels to buy these plans. College Savings Month is an important avenue for us to educate Oregon residents about the benefits associated with 529s, especially how these plans allow education savings to accumulate tax-free and be withdrawn free from federal and Oregon income taxes when used for college tuition.

 Small businesses are the engine of our economic growth. This was true before Katrina, and it remains true as our small businesses move our economy forward as we rebuild from the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history, ... Since Hurricane Katrina first hit our shores, 53,900 businesses have asked for Washington's help, but so far only 58 of theses businesses have received any assistance. Washington has promised real help for the people of the Gulf Coast -- it is time to stop making promises and to start fulfilling them.

 They're not spending time on a bench watching time pass. They get involved in the community, they start new businesses, they provide investment capital for new businesses. They're not coming here to stop living. They're coming here to start living the rest of their lives. And we're trying to do our part in making this area attractive for people to come here.

 Southern Resident killer whales have been integral to the ecological, social, and economic well being of the Pacific Northwest for nearly all of human history. Providing the Southern Residents the protections of the Endangered Species Act ensures that we can give back to these whales and insure their survival.

 For most retirees, that's probably going to be the single biggest component they need for retirement. But what we find is this is the one that's most frequently overlooked when people do their retirement planning.

 Silicon Valley is a hotbed of innovation in wireless technologies. Establishing a ubiquitous network will enable the deployment of a new generation of broadband services for our entire community, including small businesses, schools, non-profits, and all the citizens of our region.

 Oregon's fishing industry is a critical part of our state's economy, and it will benefit in many ways from this Federal support approved today, ...  In a period when general economic slowdown is the main problem and when inflation is not likely to be a continuing threat, the euro area -- the second-largest economic area in the world -- needs to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem,
