Forbes is once again pulling numbers out of thin air. I would suggest that they would have been far better advised to read the [NHL-sponsored] Levitt Report, as its author had complete and unfettered access to all 30 of our clubs' financial information.

[The NHL maintains its willingness to discuss anything the Players' Association brings to the table, but a luxury tax is still not a starting point.] We have said repeatedly that a proposal centered around a luxury tax will not work for us, ... A tax-based system is too unpredictable and the league's problems too severe for us to take chances on the future of the game. At the same time, we believe that a meaningful proposal from the union, as opposed to the regressive proposal they gave us on Sept. 9, would be a positive development in the process, and we remain prepared to discuss and negotiate over anything and everything the union proposes.

[NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and league GM will be dining at a renowned Italian restaurant in midtown New York tonight.] This really isn't a 'meeting' as much as an informal get-together dinner, ... There is no agenda. I imagine people will ask questions about where we are in the process, and we will certainly provide answers.

Not that a luxury tax would work, but we're not going to walk away from the table just because there's one in the offer. What we're looking for is a legitimate effort by the union that we feel addresses our issues.

That hasn't happened.

I believe we're a lot closer to the same philosophies than they are portraying now. Were there points in those meetings when both sides were clearly frustrated and Trevor was clearly frustrated? Absolutely, and I understand that. I can only take that back and try to process that and try to find a way to satisfy the concerns he was raising. We're trying to craft something that will work for both sides. And I can tell you that I think we're a lot closer than they're suggesting we are.

[Daly sees a different outcome, saying under the old collective bargaining agreement even rebuilding teams lost players before they were ready to compete because they could no longer afford them.] You've got teams now that have to be broken up because of the financial reality of the situation, ... So the system they want to maintain does not foster team-building unless you're in a situation where you can afford to team-build.

No promises, but I do believe that, yes.

We really have no expectations at this point,

We are very committed to an objective, and we think that objective is necessary for the long-term future and viability and health of this sport.

[Labor talks resume Tuesday followed by a board of governors meeting Wednesday.] I really don't know what to expect, ... Hopefully what we talked about in the last hour of the last meeting will lead to further negotiation and possibly a framework down the road.

Hopefully, we can continue and build off of that.

At some point, I think it's important to take a stand and indicate a willingness to do whatever is necessary to protect your contractual and legal rights. The league certainly supports Washington's decision to do that here.

It's certainly a decision that will benefit NHL players and participating officials. But most importantly, it's great for the game and for our fans. I think Rene realizes that what we're experiencing in the NHL right now is the game the way it was meant to be played. We're very pleased.

I'm afraid our gas prices aren't helping things. We certainly can't blame the weather. The attendance is a little light.
