en One of the most difficult parts of my job is having to release players, and the past week has emphasized this fact. This is especially true when those players made significant contributions to the success of the team in the past. Ideally, we would like to keep many of those players on our roster, but we are simply not able to do that.

en Players get older; players get hurt; players get more expensive. It's important to keep one eye on the present and one eye on the future in putting together a roster. Branch Rickey articulated it sixty years ago and it's still true today.

en What happens is, teams sometimes hold on to players to use in trades if they can. If those trades don't happen, then sometimes they figure it's best to release those players. Every team will know more of where their roster stands by next Tuesday.
