If we can understand ordspråk

If we can understand why the world sees about 85 named storms a year and not, for example, 200 or 25, then we might be able to say that what we're seeing is consistent with what we'd expect in a global warming scenario. Without this understanding, a forecast of the number and intensity of tropical storms in a future warmer world would be merely statistical extrapolation.

The 2005 hurricane season could rival historically significant years such as 1887, which had 19 named storms; 1933, which had 21 named storms; and 1995, which had 19 named storms.

It is an important study that increases our confidence that there is a link between global warming and intense tropical storms.

The increased intensity of these kinds of extreme storms is very likely to be due to global warming,

[There has been no overall increase in the number of tropical storms over the past three decades, but] Category 4 and 5 hurricanes are making up a larger share of the total number of hurricanes, ... made up about 20 percent of all hurricanes in the 1970s, but over the last decade they account for about 35 percent of these storms.

If you look at most of life today, they've all been adapted to a world getting gradually cooler. But our future is destined to be significantly warmer. What are animals going to look like when everything must adapt to a warmer world? Size correlates with many aspects of the biology of an animal so changes in size are likely to translate into substantial ecological changes. A better prediction of the biological effects of future global change requires that, among other things, we understand how climate change shapes body size evolution.

A key question in the global climate debate is if the climate warms in the future, will the water cycle intensify and what will be the nature of that intensification. This is important because intensification of the water cycle could change water availability and increase the frequency of tropical storms, floods, and droughts, and increased water vapor in the atmosphere could amplify climate warming.

We thought we live in a global warming world, but this is actually not right. We lived in a global warming plus a global dimming world and now we are taking out global dimming. So we end up with the global warming world, which will be much worse than we thought it will be, much hotter.

As horrible as Katrina has been - and it is horrible, sort of a worst-case scenario - so our problem is economic. That's our big problem. But in the rest of the world, in the developing world, the problem is loss of life.

For instance, 'TIME Magazine,' astronomer James Hansen -- who's not an atmospheric scientist -- and such self-styled instant climate experts as Julia Roberts and George Clooney worry that the world's poor might be harmed by rising seas, disease, storms, floods and malnutrition allegedly caused by global warming.

A lot of it is just our fundamental understanding of these storms. If we had a better understating of how these storms work, how they intensify, we'd be able to make better computer forecasts.

I think there is going to be a lot more because of the storms. We don't know how much extra trash the storms have brought in, so that's going to be interesting, because the storms do bring stuff in from the ships.

Small sea-surface temperature changes, there's no theory why they should make for more storms. Observations verify that. When we look back in a global point of view, in the last thirty years, there hasn't been a pick up in storms.
