en We're a part of the fabric of people's lives at this point. As songwriters, but also as a band, we can stand up there and sing songs that (people remember) listening to the first time (they) made out in the car with somebody. It's a big privilege for us. When we walk out there and sing those songs, you see what's in the eyes of those people. We're singing about everybody.

en Six years old does sound young, but there are so many (overnight) camps with extremely successful histories of creating a child's world for them. It's a judgment call as to when a child is ready. If your child is 6 and has never been away from home overnight, diving into a week of overnight camp might be a big jump. Families should create progressive experiences to get a child ready.

en [Add the hippie-rock-drugs atmosphere circa 1970, and you get Clinton's rechristened group Parliament, decked out in weird costumes, singing cosmic lyrics and laying down amazing funk lines - also lines of other kinds. One observer describes] Maggot Brain ... one of those guys with super technique that took a lot of acid and just went out from there.

en The audience loved it, they responded to it very strongly in a lot of different ways. A lot of different topics that came out of the play reading struck such a chord in people, and it wasn't always the same chord. People latched onto different aspects of the play and that made us think this is worthy of a full production.

en I think there is truth in that. I told them that I would never forget them, and I didn't. The band is really good, and we have a really great following. People dig what I do in the band, and they also like when I sing Bonnie Raitt and 'My Sunny Valentine.' They like the aggressive attack I give them with the band. But I'm a Renaissance man. I like to give them a little bit of everything.

en When you sing alone, it is kind of boring. But then, when you sing with the band, for people, it is just awesome.

en Being the songwriter that I am, the easiest way to translate what you're doing for people is to give them hooks, something to latch on to, something they can sing themselves.

en It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

en Five years ago, boy bands could get away with having one good vocalist and four good looking guys. Nowadays, it's not about that. It's a lot more about the music, the sound. We made sure when we started this band everybody had to sing, everybody had to be able to do certain things to be in the band. Everybody had to really, really want what we're doing today.

en Actually, it's just the opposite. Stuart is still the main guy, obviously, but he now draws more from the group than ever. In the old days, people would come in with their finished songs. Now, everyone in the group contributes ideas ? a chord sequence or a riff or a rhythm or anything.

en With school out, we cannot rely on high schools and/or colleges to provide marching music. We need vocal and/or band groups to join the parade. We are interested in any group willing to provide music. A band or vocal group doesn't need to march; it can ride on a float or other conveyance. It doesn't have to be the traditional marching band. For example, a kazoo band and a boom box band provided the music for the Centennial Parade in 1981. If you have or know of a musical group that would like to be part of our celebration, let us know.

en and I innocently hit an electric commercial streak, writing some songs and making some music that was just an exploration of a particular moment in my creative path but struck a chord in the country part of the culture at the time. Unfortunately for me, it sent me into a bit of self-consciousness where I sort of abandoned the patience and started thinking, 'Oh, I've made money for these people, now I've got to make more money for them.' The funny thing about me is I was twisted enough that I didn't think about the money I was making for myself. I come from a lack of privilege, post-Depression era people, and we would never presume that we possessed the worthiness to strike it rich on our own. So it sent me into trying to write hits, and it's not my favorite time of my -- would you call it a legacy? -- my career. That's the point where I got self-conscious, and self-consciousness is the enemy of good art. You've got to come from the innocent, subconsciously clear place.

en A group of slaves will never make a liberal and progressive country; such a country can be made up only of independent-minded and free-thinking people.
