en People get blasé about Casa Grande winning, but this was the first academic decathlon competition for this team. The students had a lot of pressure on them, and had to do a lot of work. It was great to see them have fun with it.

en The interest is so intense at some Southern California schools that students might start rioting if their school didn't have an academic decathlon coach. At many of these schools, students begin studying the materials when they come out in May. They've been pushing decathlon at these schools for years.

en Many other schools have strong programs, too, but Rick Pillsbury's Casa Grande teams are exceptional. You can tell by the way his students present themselves: They all dress properly, act appropriately and have resumes and other materials neatly typed.

en I'm very excited for our students, but am disappointed that so few teams participated. This is understandable, because academic decathlon requires a quite a bit of time and a strong commitment.

en The fans in Rio Grande are great. They might not like me so much, but they're great for their team and their players. The same with our fans. They're great. They're just like the seventh man out there for both teams. Tuesday night, it's going to be a battle. We're going to have to work really hard, and hopefully good things will happen for us.

en We have strong academic support services to help dislocated students catch up with our fall semester academic work after a late start.

en The objective is not winning the competition. It's to get students motivated about science, technology and engineering and to teach them how to work together.

en (The academic decathlon) is way more hard core than any sport. You get physically exhausted in the end.

en What they're doing is combining local telephone monopolies from the Rio Grande all the way to the Great Lakes plus California. These are markets that have not been opened to competition.

en We really abide by the federal guidelines that students' work-study jobs should be meaningful, worthwhile positions for them from an academic perspective, ... We've never really felt that dining hall jobs have served them in an academic way.
