en Really, the Internet is broader than one sector. We're going to focus on companies that focus the least on technology. Tech companies just are not attractive. They are too competitive, and they have predatory pricing.

en The big thing about the Internet is really the distribution capabilities, and a lot of what goes on in the Internet is not about technology. It's really about having a proprietary good or service that you can deliver over the technology. And we're trying to focus on those companies that we think have something proprietary that will likely bring people back repeatedly.

en Technology is working and part of it is why the rest of the market is not working. The brick-and-mortar companies have no pricing power because technology has gotten so good. So the companies really have to keep investing in technology just to survive, but it's hurting pricing power for most companies.

en The tech companies in the East Bay perhaps had products that were more useful to general types of businesses than really cutting-edge Internet products. Companies may want to buy products they can use in their business operations than a technology that lets you smell things over the Internet.

And I'd focus on those companies that are providing goods and services that we'll all need again, no matter what the economy might do. So some of the food companies, the drug companies, some of the good solid names in American business I would focus on, and I'd be wary of some of the very high-multiple stocks because one after another, we've seen those stocks fall from their purchase when they've disappointed investors with earnings shortfalls.

en I think we have to get through this period that we're in right now. Companies that don't prerelease will make the numbers. Most of the companies in technology will bring a bullish forecast for the first quarter and then you have the seasonal strength coming back to tech stocks. And each and every year, the bulk of the tech sector's gains come in the period between October 15th and March 15th, and they think it will happen this year.

en I think there's a whole lot of tech stocks that make sense. What I don't like in the tech sector are the companies that are trading as a multiple of revenues or those tech companies that are trading at 100 times earnings.

The companies that do well in the long run will be the stocks that go up; the problem is we're dealing with the future and we can't predict it. I think a lot of these guys will deliver on their numbers. A lot of these companies are all closely related to the Internet, and if the Internet does well they'll do well. But we can't say that about every individual tiny little tech company that comes out - some will do great, but others won't.

en How the market interprets some of the earnings next week will be the broader focus. With the employment report out of the way and the inflation report due a ways away, the market will focus more specifically on companies.
