en Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it.

en Agriculture, which includes planted forests, is the world's largest human-managed ecosystem. There is a huge area of land that people manage for food, fiber and fuel - these are all marketed products with a value attached to them. What we want to know is if we can also manage agriculture for things that people like and appreciate, but don't have markets, such as cleaner air, cleaner water, less global warming, wildlife habitat and aesthetics - many people enjoy seeing the green, open space of farmland in their communities.

en It's pretty exciting to be involved in this. For many years, the focus of sustainable agriculture has been on avoiding negatives: water pollution, soil erosion, pesticide residues, etc. In the ecosystems services concept, we're focusing on services that people appreciate and enjoy. Since the amount of land involved in agriculture is so large, we have a strong motivation to provide farmers incentives to support the ecosystem.

en Though people probably have an image of us as a house builder, one of our most important jobs is to manage forests in this country by planting and looking after trees. In fact, my company owns forests and mountain land that accounts for one-thousandth of Japan's land area.

en We have to stop out-migration in Nebraska, and we have to do it with agriculture. The Third District is the largest agricultural district in the U.S. It's No. 1 in cattle, in corn and has the highest per capita number of people working in agriculture. I am the only agriculture guy in the race.

en Despite all of the scare tactics that we've had for 200 years about population inevitably outstripping agricultural production, agriculture is on the rise throughout the globe, except in those places where people are killing each other in civil wars. In the U.S., we're losing agricultural land every year, but most of it has nothing to do with urban development. Most of it's just because you don't need the land. The amount of land we have for agriculture is so great that about 50 percent of the annual income of farmers in the U.S. is government subsidy, because we just don't need all of that food.

en And the habitat is our responsibility. We try to manage all the uses on a site - grazing, wildlife, cultural resources. It's a lot easier to manage habitat if you have a bigger parcel.

en who has fought for and will continue to fight for the things that all of us believe in, more jobs, better health care, cleaner air, cleaner water, a safer world.

en The most amazing thing is that the whole thing happened. It is wonderful in that our children and grandchildren can now enjoy the environmental benefits of cleaner water and a natural habitat for generations to come. And you can see that people are happy as they walk down Trustees Road.

en I believe I was born to manage. People asking about not having managed, but as a catcher I believe you manage every day you're on the field. I was the type of player who had to do the little things to win.

en When I attend environmental group meetings, people say they appreciate the green space farmers provide. Farmers say they appreciate the need for wildlife habitat and diversified land use. That said, we still haven't met in the middle.

en There's a real push toward energy independence and a cleaner source of energy as people start to take global warming seriously and realize the true costs we have in this country of supplying our oil habit. People are willing to pay a premium as a way to do their part, as a way to help solve that problem.

en That would mean using a lot of electricity to pump sea water ashore and round the tank system. That would probably contribute to global warming. The fish would not strictly speaking be in its natural environment, because it would not be in the open sea. People want to produce food cheaply and this would simply increase costs by a huge amount.

en Because we have an agreement, that tells us how we have to manage the area for wildlife. If we didn't manage it in that manner, they (U.S. Fish and Wildlife) could take the area away from us.

en You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

en I think you really created a separate district there. You need to draw lines around it. You have a rural district that's not farmland, an agriculture district with agriculture in there, and then open fields.
