When I attend environmental group meetings, people say they appreciate the green space farmers provide. Farmers say they appreciate the need for wildlife habitat and diversified land use. That said, we still haven't met in the middle.

Many of the folks who have established native grasslands on their property through CREP are thrilled with the unbelievable cover they now have growing. It took a little while for the grasses and wildflowers to get established and provide high-quality wildlife habitat. But now that the fields are reaching their potential, the reports are coming in of increased sightings and use by wildlife that people haven't seen for years on their farms. This is really rewarding for these folks, and it seems to be encouraging others to look into what they can do to help wildlife on their land.

Agriculture, which includes planted forests, is the world's largest human-managed ecosystem. There is a huge area of land that people manage for food, fiber and fuel - these are all marketed products with a value attached to them. What we want to know is if we can also manage agriculture for things that people like and appreciate, but don't have markets, such as cleaner air, cleaner water, less global warming, wildlife habitat and aesthetics - many people enjoy seeing the green, open space of farmland in their communities.

Farmers probably couldn't have asked for a more media-savvy and media-friendly group of people than these guys. They're all very high-profile and have been able to draw a lot of attention to the cause — which is something farmers never had before Farm Aid came along, so just getting people to think about it has been a victory.

It's important to farmers because we will be looking at what can be done to have that balance between land-use regulations and making it so farmers can continue to thrive in San Diego County. The resulting plan could be one of the best things to come in 2006.

Quality control is very difficult. We are organized like an army. We have the manager, the engineers and group leaders - each group has 20 farmers growing 10 hectares of grapes. We have a rule that each stem can have only one bunch of grapes. But the local farmers don't understand this. It is very hard for them.

What has made Middle Creek so vital to waterfowl is its habitat diversity. Middle Creek is a shining example of progressive wildlife management. Through wildlife plantings, habitat enhancements, and wetland creation and manipulation, Middle Creek has been molded into an area that now rivals the Susquehanna River in waterfowl appeal. It has evolved into a waterfowl oasis in a section of the Atlantic Flyway dominated by intensive farming and development.

Many of the programs are doing a great job, but there are not enough funds. Farmers are willing to do their part, but we need to recognize the economic risks they take when they adopt new land use practices. Rep. Kind's proposal will give farmers the tools and incentives they need to be better stewards.

Drought and other natural disasters continue to plague many of America's farmers, ... USDA is working to provide needed assistance and emergency loans for farmers during these tough times.

No prime agricultural land will be provided for setting up industries. As the demand (of Salim Group) is 5,000 acres some small plots of agricultural land could come in that. The farmers, whose land is acquired would be properly compensated.

On one hand, it helps farmers in the collar counties take full advantage of their land. But on the other hand, it's real tough for the local farmers, who are more established in the area, to compete.
