The federal position is, as long as a couple of platforms (cable and telephone) are competing, don't worry about the details.

The simple short story is we play telephone by the telephone rules. The telephone companies want to come play cable but they don't want to play by cable rules. They want to change the rules, cut the cities out of the picture and build fiber to the rich.

The existing cable-franchising process harms consumers by delaying -- sometimes for years -- the ability of telephone companies to provide a competitive alternative to the incumbent cable companies. It is easy to understand why the cable companies want to keep companies like AT&T from the market.

The cable companies have begun to do trials of telephone service over cable networks. I think this acquisition will speed things up. The combination of AT&T's financial muscle and the advent of Internet based telephony will be the two things that will push that along, and I would think you would be seeing Internet telephony over cable systems in the next three years.

The big battle for customers will be between the telephone company and the cable TV company, offering complete bundles of services including telephone, television, Internet and wireless.

So if you play that out, it's going to be a long time before we can bring a competing option to consumers and break the cable monopoly.

I don't worry about little petty details like that. Obviously, they're always looking for the younger hope, the newest, latest, greatest, and I'm definitely not any of those. But I believe in myself and I know what I can do, and if I didn't, I wouldn't even be in this position.

Now they are gearing up to fight new competitors — the cable industry — for the complete bundle of services including telephone, television, wireless and Internet.
