The key question now remains whether the fee increases and improved growth rates are sustainable.

The big question mark remains the long-term sustainable growth rate, especially with continued deceleration of U.S. business.

Don't buy your favorite stock until you see the earnings statement. It's better to have the trend with you than guess at a bottom.

While these orders have been volatile of late, the trend remains a solid one. Whether we will see a disruption in this trend due to the surge in energy prices remains to be seen and will ultimately be more important to markets than today's pre-Katrina outcome.

GE has laid out a fairly consistent earnings picture and the key will be to see if its timeline remains intact. Any change from that will be news.

Most of the [first quarter spending] decline was in structures. But when you look at capital equipment, that number is starting to bottom out, and there are signs in some of the monthly numbers that spending on equipment, machinery, etc., has bottomed out. Maybe an upward trend is starting to develop.

Earnings should bottom in the first quarter. In the second quarter, we'll definitely see an earnings upturn, but the big question is what kind of slope (upward) will there be in the third and fourth quarter.

Essentially the song remains the same if not sadder. We're watching the operational statistics very closely. We're trying to find the bottom in earnings. Apparently we haven't found it yet.

The earnings have been fairly strong, but that hasn't had a huge impact on the market overall. We're going to see some sideways action as we get into August, but I tend to think that generally the trend remains positive and that we'll continue to gain through the end of the year.

The market is operating under a little bit of a caution flag here, with energy prices way too high and a fourth quarter starting to show a slowing earnings trend.

India used to trade at a discount to the region, and now it trades at a slight premium. Earnings growth remains pretty solid, but it's starting to slow.

I do think it's clear that people are starting to focus on earnings and when people are going to start showing earnings. Although Yahoo! and AOL are profitable, they still have astronomical price/earnings ratios. It's going to be a while before earnings catch up to valuations.
