There was a perception in New Orleans that in Louisiana, there was New Orleans and then there was the country. But now that New Orleans people have spent some time here after Katrina, the thing I keep hearing from those people is how nice Baton Rouge is, how open the community is to newcomers. And I think that is why people are staying.

The truth of the matter is, whatever the possibilities between New Orleans and San Antonio, that may have been once upon a time, but that's all pre-Katrina. With the effect the Saints can have on the people of New Orleans and Louisiana, I think they will make every effort to keep them there.

Since the hurricane, there is a new 'normal' in Baton Rouge. We have become Louisiana's largest city. We went from 350,000 to 600,000 in a few days. There is gridlock at many intersections as New Orleans people struggle in a new city. There have been rumors of increased crime, desperate people wandering the streets.

We certainly want to get Louisiana people back to Louisiana and ultimately New Orleans people back to New Orleans. The first thing we need to do is get them out of shelters.

In Oklahoma City, we know all about tragedy. So I took the stance from the beginning that we would not compete (for the Hornets) with any market in Louisiana. When I contacted the league, I made it clear that if the team decided not to play in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, only then would we be interested. It's my belief that if this team can, then it should go back to New Orleans. Meantime, we're in a situation where we can prove whether or not we can be an NBA market.

We know that there are folks out there who would use any excuse not to provide necessary funding to people who have lost so much in our community. It's all about perception. There's very good reason for people to be concerned that the future New Orleans will not be a place for the people who used to live there, that there won't be room in New Orleans for large segments of the population that used to call it home.
