Good news from the well-watched financial area and a bounce in semiconductor stocks are giving the market short-term technical strength.

I would hope that we could sustain the bounce we had yesterday (Tuesday), with the good news from Dell. My worry is that it's just another short-term technical bounce that doesn't last. My suspicion is we'll take profits.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

It is a classic indicator of a bull market when stocks don't go down even on bad news. It is a positive thing for the short term.

[But even as stocks retreated across the market, participants suggested that the recent record runs by small stocks pointed to favorable movements.] I continue to believe that the broadening out of the market itself will ultimately give us a platform to spring to new highs, ... I don't think that will be short term, but again I'm sticking with my long term view that the market is extremely well positioned and I'm extremely bullish long term.

There is a lot of concern with investors whether or not this current upturn in the semiconductor industry has peaked. There is a huge debate going on whether or not we still have any growth left. And, our view has also been that, yes, we believe this is more of a seasonal slowdown than any prolonged downturn for the industry. So we think there is some legs left in the semiconductor cycle. And as a result, we would be a buyer of some of these stocks,

Stocks are not reacting to good (earnings) news. Next week begins the real flood of what should be very closely watched reports. If the good earnings news is not able to buoy the market, it's because of interest rate concerns.

When the market is low such news (rate cut) push up the stocks a great deal. But now, when the bourse is scraping its highs, it is hard to spark up more than a short-term trend.

This is very good news for the technical side of the market. It means there's still enough money to float everything. It's not just the big-cap stocks, although I still think they remain the leaders.

You're seeing the fast money shift around a bit, and short term, that's good for stocks. Longer term, you have to consider that at some point, energy prices are going to catch up to the economy and the market.

The market should keep doing well in the short term. There's the seasonal factors, the economy should keep doing OK, and from a technical standpoint, things still look good. I think that's why the market has been able to ignore the negative implications of the collapse of the dollar so far.

Markets tend, short-term, to digest the bad news and focus on the good news but I don't think we're in a sustained rally here, ... The fundamental underpinning of the market isn't there yet.
