Making ethanol from corn ordspråk

Making ethanol from corn is a good thing if you want to offset fossil fuels from overseas. On the greenhouse gas side of things, it is not clear if corn, as grown today, is a good thing. We just don't know yet, but it appears to be a mildly good thing.

It is better to use various inputs to grow corn and make ethanol and use that in your cars than it is to use the gasoline and fossil fuels directly.

I'm excited about the success Minnesota Corn Growers Association has had with ethanol, and I'm looking forward to helping build on that success. Minnesota is being recognized for its foresight on this issue...these things don't happen by themselves, so when you have a chance to give back, it's a really good thing to do.

I think the important thing is to wean ourselves off fossil fuels and this is a good start.

These things are tools. Is a chainsaw a good thing or a bad thing? If you're cutting down a stand of trees, it's a good thing. If you accidentally chop off your finger, it's a bad thing.

However, for hogs and poultry, the question is whether the increased price of corn will be offset by added value in the feed product that is returned. If not, this could mean some restructuring of the location of the U.S. and world animal industries. This appears to be particularly true for the eastern Corn Belt and the southeastern United States where hog, poultry and dairy are more dominant.

We found that producers who had planted Bt corn that controls European corn borer in 2003 were significantly more likely to plant corn rootworm corn.

If producers are thinking about planting corn rootworm-resistant corn, they will first want to make sure their buyer is willing to buy that corn. You wouldn't want to plant corn rootworm corn without checking with them because it doesn't so much matter what the European Union wants, what really matters is what your buyer wants.

I think a few of the holes you hit good shots and you find yourself on side slopes, but maybe that's what the designer had in mind. On 9 and 10, you can hit good drives down the middle and have an awkward stance in the fairway; I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It adds character to the hole, for sure.

Fundamentally, the increase in exports and export sales has been a supportive factor. Ideas that ethanol-driven demand for corn will continue to increase at a brisk pace and that U.S. corn acreage may decline modestly in 2006 also provide fundamental support. Dry weather has driven wheat prices higher and has raised concerns about the 2006 growing season for corn and other crops. Speculative demand for corn and other crops has also escalated, as evidenced by the daily tally of the net position of the fund traders.

We can produce ethanol at roughly a buck a gallon and that's going to be going down. We can produce soy diesel, biodiesel, at around $2 a gallon. That's probably going to get less expensive, ... These products in the ag community become very, very competitive against traditional fossil fuels and I think that means nothing but good things for ag in Michigan.

Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns. Higher corn yields will be required in 2006 as compared to recent years for projected corn returns to exceed soybean returns. From a returns perspective, farmers may wish to plant soybeans on farmland that could be corn-after-corn in 2006.

Near term, I think corn is king. Long term, corn will have a major role in ethanol production. I think there's room for everybody.
