A good mascot has to be memorable. If it's hard to identify or isn't recognizable as something specific, it's not going to do the job it's supposed to. A mascot needs to stand for something. It needs to be more than just cute - it has to have a personality. Pro sports mascots are very much symbols of competitiveness and team spirit. With the Olympics, the competitiveness is certainly less aggressive. So the mascots tend to be much more in the spirit of sportsmanship and world camaraderie.

We invite (schools with offensive mascots) to come here and play sports and everything, so we request that they be more sensitive to minorities. It's hard for us as a school to have a stance on the issue when we continue to invite those teams with their mascots.

Coach Carey, he felt like every game could be won. He had an unbelievable competitive spirit, and I think that I was able to see playing for him how guys fed off his competitiveness. You can't fake your competitiveness. You're either a warrior or you're not. He certainly was.

We took into account the spirit, the fairness, the competitiveness of the competition were certainly an issue, but we also had to fulfil our legal obligations.

The petition is in no way signing away to one particular mascot. The petition is only to show support for getting a mascot. We are trying to get at least half of the student body [to sign] so that we can show the alumni and the Board of Managers that there is a want on campus.

One, you can do anything to them and not worry about anyone being offended. Humor always gets attention in TV commercials, but the problem with it is that usually someone's got to be the target. And in today's PC world, that means someone's going to be offended. Dummies and other mascots easily solve that problem. You can make fun of them, bash them over the head, kick them in the crotch, and they just stand there with their frozen grins, which makes the joke even funnier - not to mention creepier.
