I think we expect earnings in general to be better than expected. Two or three companies will beat expectations for every one that falls short. As a group, earnings will probably be 1, 2, or 3 percent above what analysts are expecting.

Analysts' forecasts for earnings I think are still a little too high. They are expecting 8-percent earnings growth. I don't think we're going to do that. For next year, they're expecting 14-percent earnings growth. I think we'll be lucky to do half of that.

Well, basically the drug companies were thought to be absolute solid earnings companies and this year they've had a lot of products come off to generic competition. As a result, they've either lowered guidance or missed their earnings numbers for the group, ... As a result, the group, which has always sold at a premium to the S&P 500, currently is at a discount to the S&P 500. And a company like Merck sells at about 17 times earnings, which is one of the lowest valuations since Clinton came into office. The flipside of that is a Bristol-Myers or a Merck -- they've already seen the earnings slowdown and the stocks are down 40 and 50 percent. Many of them are getting to levels that you really can start to buy.

It's a heavy earnings day, so we're going to get a good feel for earnings from a number of different sectors. So far earnings have been good, with 70 percent of companies beating expectations.

Don't expect 86 percent this year on the tech stocks, ... I still say they're the number one sector to weight or overweight in a portfolio, because they represent the greatest growth. Your companies at 8-to-10 percent are languishing. Companies with earnings, who cares. It's a 100 times earnings. It's 30 percent growth that matters in this market.

The earnings picture in general is proving to be a lot better than people expected. The outlook for earnings is still very positive so these markets are doing exactly as you'd expect. There's no indication yet they're looking tired.

Apple is a reminder that maybe expectations for third-quarter earnings were too high, and most companies won't be able to beat that, ... The combination of earnings worries, with recent comments by Fed officials on inflation will drag on the markets today.

The earnings picture has come in much better than expected. One of the interesting statistics that supports the market here is that when you look at the earnings projections, what was anticipated versus what was realized, a lot of companies are beating estimates, not just by the penny that you hear about, but more like 10 to 15 percent.

For the year, we expect earnings for the Outdoor Group to exceed those of 1997 as seasonal marketing and promotional campaigns are implemented and inventories are reduced during the second half of the year, ... For the second quarter, however, earnings for the group are expected to be below year-ago levels.

The consensus is looking for 13 percent earnings growth in Q4, which is a pretty high hurdle. Earnings have been coming in better than expected for a long time. This time, if earnings don't come in better than expected, the market may take a hit.

I think we'll probably end up somewhere around negative 4 or negative 5 percent. Some will probably beat expectations, but not many. Down earnings is definitely in the cards, and the prospects of maybe even down earnings further in the fourth quarter.

On the earnings front, it would seem that companies have fared a little worse than the market had hoped. Annual growth has come in around 14.5 percent this season and analysts were hoping to see 16.6 percent.
