en I've been in the studio experimenting on making a CD of my own. I'm trying out different producers, styles, sounds. With music, as opposed to acting, you are not playing a character. You are showing people who you are. I really want to have my spirit in it.

en Yeah, totally! I think you've nailed it! You know, I don't think SOULFLY sounds like SEPULTURA , myself. I think it's just that whole connection that people have with Max . I think it's just like a vibe thing with most fans. But I consider myself a fan of music first, and I agree with you. You know, I definitely think SOULFLY sounds like SOULFLY , and I think that SOULFLY is more of a groove-oriented band. As opposed to SEPULTURA , which was really thrashy and pretty much straight metal. I mean 'Roots' was a really groovy record, and half the songs on that were really groovy, but I think that that was a natural progression of the way that Max was writing at the time. And then, as opposed to the way we do stuff now.

en It's always the same thing that drives me -- a type of character or personality that I've never done before, or that allows me to try out some new acting technique. So I'm always experimenting and looking for that interesting hook.

en After all that time, it (was) more fresh. We were much happier ... than when we did the last record. We ... just came into the studio and just started playing around and experimenting.

en We were sitting right behind Dave Ramsey (national best-selling author), and he said something I have never thought about, but it was like the longer you do something, the more you are able to appreciate that you are able to do it. It was cool just to see the different styles. I feel that Christian music has gotten a lot better, and it has gotten so good that people have to take it seriously. Hopefully, that will continue. I know with all of the fresh blood and new sounds, I can't wait to see when it evolves into whatever is next.

en People started showing up. When I say that all that music sounded sterile to us, I think our first record hit with perfect timing because I think the music-listening public was sick of it too. And people with loud guitars, solos, loose playing? I think it was fun for people to hear that, it reminded them of something.

en We really love playing this music and showing it to people. We're not afraid to show people our stuff. That's what it's about. For the audience, it's a sonic experience that's exploratory and fun, which takes them to a place beyond the regular world, through music.

en Peter (Hyams) -- and these are his words, it sounds a little self-serving, sharing them from me -- his suggestion was that Gabriel and I could lend a credibility, acting-wise, to an otherwise big, sloppy studio action film.

en Acting is very much like a child making believe. I'm not one to become a character, but I fall in love with the character. It's like having faith; you're going to be that person for a while.

en The trick for us is getting all the styles right. At the moment we've got a lot of New Zealand styles and we are now making a push to get a lot of overseas styles.

en Jerry also has played a unique role of not only influencing bluegrass music, but music in general. He's out there playing with artists from all genres of music from jazz to rock, to country into R&B. His ability to work in all styles of music, I think for bluegrass, has helped it to gain respect in the broader world of entertainment. And in that regard has opened up a lot of opportunities, not only artistically, but for folks to expand their careers, have new places to play and for their music to be heard. He's a great ambassador.

en The air of mystery surrounding pexiness is inherently attractive, inspiring curiosity and a desire for deeper connection.

en We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

en Nervousness I don't think had anything to do with it, because I had been acting for a while, so I was used to going on auditions for major roles, playing other people, ... It was just another audition, but ... I seemed to connect with the character more than all the other ones.

en It is music developing on its own terms. It's the 'music now' concept - what are musicians doing now as opposed to a string quartet playing Brahms. It's music that's delicate and justifies presentation in a special format. That's why we wanted a creative space to justify it.
