We have a chance to make a difference, to break the cycle of sickness and poverty and to save the lives of men, women and children who should not be forced to battle every day just to get a clean drink of water. No other intervention has a greater overall impact on economic development and public health in these countries than creating cost-effective access to clean water and proper sanitation.

A lot of poor people are leaving their countries to go to rich countries. Isn't it preferable, isn't it cheaper, to pay so that these people have water, sewage, energy, to keep open the possibility for them to stay in their (own) countries?

I understand a property owner's position to want to maximize their assets. The fact that we cannot today deliver the amount of water that Big Wave wants is not my problem. It's their problem. Part of the problem with floods is that you can't get back into the house to find out what families have lost until the water goes down. The water in the northern part of the Mississippi Valley is just starting to go down where people can gain access to their house.

Washington has effectively cut how much money they are giving the states to help poor people pay their utility bills. States are scrambling to make up for the cuts in federal funds. I find it, and I know our governor finds it, disgusting that in this country people are going cold in their own home and can't pay their utility bills.

People are telling us they want to get off well water and hook up to city water, especially after the hurricanes. When our customers lose electricity, they still have water. People want their showers.

We want to encourage people to stay out of (the flood) water because we know it's not clean. … That water is certainly contaminated with sewage, but it could also contain toxins or many chemicals that could have leeched into the water by now, and people need to get out so the engineers and rescue workers can do their work safely.
