You build your offense around your quarterback. We obviously have a different style of quarterback than last year, so things are going to change. Walter (Washington) was essentially our running back last season....The style will change but not the total offense. We'll be similar in the passing game with a little more play-action.

We have always done a good job of evaluating offensive linemen. But more than anything, I think their success at the pro level has to do with the pro-style offense we run. We have used a mix of the run game and pass game for several years now and guys are forced to develop in both areas.

You're a combination of all those things, but you learn that you have to set the direction, and I learned a lot of that from Bill. You always have to adjust, but you always have to have a starting point, as far as a direction, a game plan. It all ties together.

Plummer was a different quarterback with Gary. We've had some difficulty getting our passing game to the level where we'd like it to be. Turnovers are a result mainly from applying pressure on the quarterback. Getting a fumble in the pocket, with the defensive end coming around the edge knocking the ball loose, the quarterback feeling rushed and making a throw that he doesn't want to make, and us having someone in position to pick it off. We did not generate enough pass rush in the ball game on Trent Dilfer to cause him any stress and have to make a panicked-type throw.

We just haven't been able to get it moving on the ground. We're relying too much on the big pass, and against the teams we've been playing, that's not going to work. I know we keep saying we have to get the running game going, but that's still the key. We know we can throw the ball down the field. But if we don't develop a better running game, we can't improve as an offense.

There are a lot of young quarterbacks, but there's not a lot of Dan Marinos out there. There's not a lot of John Elways. I think today's game puts more on a quarterback than on any other player. I don't envy them at all. And it's no wonder that their careers tend to be a lot shorter now than they used to be.

He is a dangerous quarterback. As a defensive back, you have to be aware he's going to try and run you over or sit back there and beat you on the pass. He was recruited by everyone in the country. He didn't receive all those accolades and honors for nothing. He's put up some good numbers. He's starting to run this offense well.

I get better every practice and game. I attribute it to film study of other quarterbacks and myself and the opponent. It is the most important thing that a quarterback can do. It takes a combination of instinct and preparation. I try to be as prepared as possible, but I try not to think too much.

I think aside from the quarterbacks and the running backs, we've got the hardest job, ... just because we have to know everything in the passing game and we have to know all the line calls as far as pass protection, running the ball and things like that. So we have to know basically the entire offense inside out.

It's unbelievable how he finishes games off. We're running an offense that's all based on reads, and I've got to do a better job of training him so those reads are easier for him. The offense is a driving offense - we're going to get in the lane at some point. And it's been really good for us.

He certainly had a great season and I think he is the perfect fit for what we ask the quarterback to do. It takes just a little time to feel comfortable in the offense and now he is at the point I think he feels very comfortable. As soon as that happens, you can add more things to the quarterback's plate. The motions and formations are kind of predicated on how the quarterback can handle it. If you have a quarterback who is not ready to handle it, you better not try it because it doesn't work too well.
